Both of these bills are now on the Governor's desk. Please call, write, fax or email and ask him to veto both. VETO AB 540 (Resident Fee Tuition for Illegal Alien Students) VETO AB 60 (Driver's Licenses for Illegal Aliens) Governor Gray Davis Use CAPS Web site to send letters and faxes INFORMATION FROM CAPS SITE Please VETO AB 540 (Resident Fee Tuition for Illegal Alien Students) This bill would give to foreign nationals unlawfully present in the U.S. benefits not provided to tax paying U.S. citizens or legal immigrants living in other states. A recent Zogby poll showed that nearly 75% of respondents oppose a law giving illegal immigrants reduced tuition to state colleges and universities. If passed, this bill will have a multimillion dollar negative fiscal impact on California's budget. In addition, this bill will result in even more students who live in the U.S. illegally taking up the limited spaces at California State Universities and Community Colleges, while citizens and students here legally may be turned away. This bill will also permit illegal alien students to apply for Education grant monies currently reserved for legal immigrants and citizens. Students in the country illegally can always apply for legal residency, if they are eligible. After legal status is approved, then can request resident tuition and financial aid. Please VETO AB 60 (Driver's Licenses for Illegal Aliens) AB-60 would repeal mandatory verification of documents by the DMV before issuing a permanent California drivers license and/or I.D. card to first time applicants. It would also delete the requirement for a Social Security number for the issuance or renewal of a driver's license or I. D. card by the DMV. You vetoed this legislation last year, thus maintaining the credibility of these state issued documents. These documents have been widely accepted as valid identification by banks for cashing checks and for other business transactions. Existing laws have been effective in preventing persons unlawfully present in the U. S. from receiving permanent California driver's licenses and I. D. cards. This has also deterred criminals from assuming false identities. The California Highway Patrol does not require foreign visitors to have a California driver's license. Their home country's license is valid here when driving on California highways. Recent reports from the US census state that there are over 11 million foreign nationals illegally residing in the U. S. 40% are in California. Can you imagine the impact of hundreds of thousands of additional cars on our already gridlocked freeways plus the additional air pollution that they would create?
