Davis' dereliction: Hugh Hewitt hammers California ungovernor's latest loony tune

WND Exclusive Commentary
Davis' dereliction

© 2001 WorldNetDaily.com

California Governor Jacques Clouseau – also known by his stage name Gray Davis – added to an already impressive legacy of incompetence last week when he declared that a credible threat against one or more of four specific bridges in the Golden State had been received from three different agencies. A rush-hour attack had been predicted for sometime between Nov. 2 and Nov. 9. But, the ungovernor added, he wouldn't presume to tell drivers whether or not to use the bridges.

It is hard to know whether to laugh or cry with this guy. The president graciously declined to second guess Davis, but everyone else not on the state payroll did. The New York Times wrote that "the Federal Bureau of Investigation has expressed surprise and annoyance that Mr. Davis had passed on an 'uncorroborated' threat, one that the agency had never intended to become public." None of the other Western governors had gone public with the alert, and despite the specificity of the Davis warning, no particular bridges had been named. In short, he lied. Worse, Davis either panicked or he decided to exploit the situation to bolster his rapidly deteriorating political position. As the Democratic president of the California state Senate put it, why would you issue such a warning and still allow the bridges to stay open? "We have word that terrorists are going to blow up the bridge," said Burton, "but people should keep crossing it?"

"There is no playbook," Davis asserted in his own defense. Actually, there is a playbook. There is just no quarterback.

The Los Angeles Times reliably leapt to the governor's defense with a sub-headline stating that "President, public appear to be on his side." This howler constructs the president's restraint as an endorsement, and reports as hard news that "[O]n Friday, calls to the governor's office ran 10-to-1 in favor of the decision to make the warnings public, said Davis spokesman Steve Maviglio." My radio program airs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and San Diego. The torrent of abuse from callers was nearly uniform. Maviglio must have failed to report that the governor's wife had called frequently that day.

This is a governor who single-handedly turned a small energy issue into a crisis complete with rolling blackouts, and who was rejected repeatedly by his own party on every attempt to cover his incompetence. Davis has recently pulled off a staggering feat, having taken a $10 billion state surplus and with very little effort turned it into a $10 billion deficit. In an attempt to rally confidence in the state, he held a "summit" the day after the bridges fiasco, and he featured John Bryson, the CEO of Southern California Edison and quite likely the least-respected business figure in the state. Davis asking Bryson for advice on the California economy is like Yosemite Sam asking Elmer Fudd for tips on rabbit hunting. Davis sat next to Michael Eisner, who must have thought that his Park had a better grip on reality than Davis.

Do you suppose all those Texans that Davis slandered last spring are in a hurry to help out the Golden State? And how about those tourists? Think they are in a rush to gaze out on the Golden Gate Bridge anytime soon?

It has taken a steady series of almost unbelievable missteps to convince this left-of-center state that the guy in charge is an empty suit, but Thursday's press conference appears to have clinched the image. Davis rose in state politics by being bland and relishing anonymity. But we had all assumed this was a plan on his part, not the product of a total absence of ideas and imagination. "Non-entity" overestimates Davis – and even reliable Dems like Burton have woken up to the fact that a state in the middle of many crises needs leadership.

The good news is that there's an election in less than a year. How much more damage can the fellow do?

Has Gray's wife kissed Arafat's wife?

Maybe the two are inseperable

Careful, Mr. Hewitt. You don't really want the answer to that question, do you?

From 'Giuliani envy': Davis defends disclosure
Posted on 11/03/2001 11:19:02 PST by JeanS

-- snip --

`Giuliani envy'

Political experts suggested Davis may have fallen into the trap of a politician who wants both to reassure the public and demonstrate his own leadership. They noted that polls have shown Davis trailing former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, his leading Republican challenger.

``Without sounding too critical, Gray Davis may have just a little bit of Giuliani envy,'' said Schnur, a former Riordan adviser, referring to the New York mayor who has won wide praise for his response to the World Trade Center attacks.

``Certainly he would never wish any kind of misfortune on California,'' Schnur said of Davis. ``But that decision to go public may have been influenced by watching other elected officials handling their turn in the spotlight in the last several weeks.''

Some critics noted that it's not the first time Davis has made a startling announcement since Sept. 11. A few weeks after the attacks, he told reporters that passengers on a commercial airliner had subdued a would-be hijacker at Los Angeles International Airport. He later conceded that he'd been given incorrect information about an incident involving an unruly passenger.

But if there is an attack on a California bridge, even his critics acknowledged, Davis will appear to have done the right thing. If there is no attack, Sabato predicted, the incident will be soon forgotten.

Grey Davis is just the latest addition to the rogues gallery of left-leaners seeking to exploit whatever they can to get some face time.

Bulletin: California Governor Gray Davis has issued a warning that, between November 9 and November 18, bridges across every Lionel model railroad setup will be attacked by mosquitoes. The governor added, "Californians are renowned for their resiliency and their grace under pressure. When called upon to sacrifice, there are none better than Californians. Therefore, I am more than confident that our people can prevail against this and other such terrorist attacks without lifting our proven-effective ban against private ownership of fly swatters."

Trouble is, in the People's Republic of California, practically everyone is on the state payroll in one way or another.

Cal. Gov. Davis Now Fears Terrorist Attack On La Brea Tar Pits By "Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man!"

The point is this: Governor Davis got some bad intel on bridges, paniced, jumped through his butt and scared the krep out of most Californians in the process.

It is time to be QUIETLY watchful, not go ape-sh*t over every rumor.

Every civilian needs to remember that there are no civilians in this fight! We are all targets for OBL, and rumors and panic are our enemies. Remember movie "1942?"

We need to cut down on the bad poop rumors, keep our eyes and ears open, make reasoned decisions and take the proper action (includung dropping the dime) after making a smart, not paniced, threat analysis.

Many FReepers are former military and vast majority have our cranial cavities screwed on tight. We can be a help, or we can be rumormongers.

Let's show the REMFs what focussed citizenry can do.

It seems to be the nature of Governor Davis to give in to panic and lose control. That is why he contracted for long term contracts for electricity at huge prices for a very short term problem. The taxpayers of Kalifornia will be paying for his panic for years. He is clearly not fit to be an executive of anything, much less a large state.

Red Davis has a small fraction of the moral and intellectual stature of a half-starved weasel in heat.

Governor Clueless suffers from 'poll flacidity' and Dosomthing Desease! The shameful "I, Chicken Little, am in charge here!" routine of Thursday is only surpassed by the "I, Mr. Wizard, am in charge here!" bit he used during our energy crisis (of his making!). If Grayout Davis is in charge of Kalifornia's security we might as well learn to play Taps...we're all gonna DIE!

My worst fear is this...

The Bureau provided info strictly for the use of law enforcement and emergency management personnel. Surely they would not have provided such info, had it not come from a reasonably reliable source. The fact that Davis went public with it probably compromised the source of the info, and that may have been one of the very few sources we have been able to cultivate amongst the terros already in our midst.

Thanks for the ping-funny! The Prince of Darkness is also the Prince of Fools.

The problem with comparing him to Inspector Cleuseau (sp?) is that even with all his bumbling efforts, the Inspector solved the crimes....

Two additional points on Bridging Facist Davis:

1. This is exactly why the FBI does not want to share its data with certain governors and mayors! Sharing data with Facist Davis would be like if Elliot Ness shared data with the criminal mayors, cops and Chicago local politicians. Now that source for the info has been compromised thanks to Davis violating the confidentiality of the data!

2. I heard Riordian (sp) on 1530 am Sacramento last night doing a live interview. He hammered Davis and his Sacramento fellow facists in the legislature for totally failing to do what is right in any situation. He said that Davis and the clowns in Sacramento have created an anti business atmosphere which is driving business out of California. He bashed Davis for his total lack of working to improve our infrastructure of the state. Of course Davis and the envirals like Club Sierra have been screwing Californias with no real infrastructure improvements since MoonBeam started the era of limits. That was the main ingredient to our power crisis. No new power plants as per the enviral nazis who control Davis!

I'm not for Riordian (sp). He will be #3 for me. I would vote for road kill to keep Davis out of office again. However, Riordian was clear and concise, and he hammered Facist Davis!
