Need to be with my own kind
Me | 11/07/01 | ModernDayCato

Posted on 11/07/2001 5:32:17 PM PST by ModernDayCato

Fellow Freepers,

Can't stand it anymore here in New England. The DEMONcrats won all of the surrounding towns, swept the area, and are breathing down my neck. Taxes are going through the roof, and the radical libs are winning seats everywhere.

They're surrounding me...those yipping voices and holier than thou gestures...closing in...WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?...strangling me..can't breathe...grabbing for Bushmaster...oops, sorry, lost control there for a second.

My question is, where can I go to be among my own kind?

I can pretty much live anywhere. Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Reasonable taxes.

2. Couldn't care less about the educational system (no kids, no plans for kids).

3. I'd like a good amount of land, near or on a body of water would be great.

4. Solid repub/conservative local government, within a conservative, friendly state would be great as well.

Other than that, I'm open.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks,
Cato

I am a native. I am prejudiced. I love all of Texas, but am partial to the hill country. Dallas and Houston are typical cities---if that's what you are looking for. Corpus Christi is a lovely coastal city--not too big, not too small. San Antonio is lovely and romantic and laid back--but they have their problems with rapid growth and a large minority population (not a racial prob, but an economic one). Because of the vastness of TX, it is easy to live in one of the "small town" cities that are close enough to the big cities to enjoy the theaters, concerts, great restaurants, sports etc. and then drive home to the "country." Towns like Boerne, Marble Falls, the area around New Braunsfel. Just my humble opinion. The coast is nice, but it is humid and you will end up owning stock in Deep Woods Off.

I was looking at Arizona too...but is it green (pardon my Yankee prejudices)?

Also, can you give me a town or two in Northern AZ?

you know...

It ain't so bad here in MO. Rural MO has lots of land, lakes and reasonable taxes.

Here in Jefferson City, we're a bit of a hybrid...Some Pubbies with some socially conservative Dems. Religion is not taboo in schools. Concealed carry lost narrowly due to the statewide vote dominated by KC and St. L...but we have hope!

Sarasota's beautiful, but my neck of the woods is south of Sarasota near Ft. Myers/Naples. We are known for having the biggest mosquito control center in the nation. How's that for incentive! We're near Sanibel Island (best shelling in the world, and Ding Darling Nature Park - fishing, kayaking, gators and birds galore), and Naples - gorgeous beaches, fine restaurants (the Ritz is ranked one of the best in the world) and million $$$ condos on the Gulf. If you like golf, we have golf. On the other hand, it's hard to find a sense of community with the independent types this area draws. Just don't go to Cape Coral, they're forever passing goofy new laws about everything from boat covers to mandatory address number sizes and forget about parking a pick-up truck in most Cape Coral neighborhoods.

If you're interested in politics, you could make a difference down here. A few people run the show and everyone else pretty much ignores them unless they pull something stupid. Local boaters are a courageous lot, often standing up to local envirals in creative ways and showing up en mass at townhall meetings when their rights are threatened.

If you're a weather watcher or photographer, we have amazing sunsets, stormclouds and rainbows. It did snow once...twenty years ago or so. (^:

I spent almost a year working for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis area.

I was walking in 'downtown' St. Louis when someone walking toward me said 'Hi, how are you?' I nearly jumped out of my skin. I worked in NYC for a while. Head down, no eye contact, fast walking.

A fellow decides one day that he was going to visit one church in every state in the US. He starts in New York. At the first church he sees a telephone with a sign that says "Call Heaven, $10,000 a minute". He does not take this too seriously but finds the same sign besides a telephone in every church. All across the country, in every church, from East Coast to West Coast, everywhere, he sees the sign to "Call Heaven, $10,000 a minute".

Finally, he gets to the last state. He walks into the church and sees the telephone but it says "Call Heaven, 10 cents". "10 cents!" He says to himself. He finds the preacher and says "Sir, I've been to every state in America and in every other church the call to heaven is $10,000! Why does it cost 10 cents here?"

The preachers looks at the man and says "Son, you are in Texas. It's a local call!"

Cowgirl,

The only real worry I have about Florida is that whenever one of the brain addled liberals around here retires or moves away, it always seems to be to Florida.

I fear we're exporting our lunatics to your beautiful state. What's more, it fits with my theory that the liberals only gravitate to the nicest climates (and ruin them). Although since we lost a Congressman in the last census I like to say we sent it down to Florida.

How's the humidity?

I grew up in NY until I left for college...my folks still live there. My Dad worked on Wall street until the spring of this year. New York is a great place to be FROM...

I came to MO due to a good job, but have found it's a great place to raise a family (outside STL and KC that is).

One thing I have noticed is that people in MO are LARGER than in other states I have lived in...it seems that eating is a sport around here...

Please do NOT come to Texas. We got everybody we need and then some. On my ranch alone we got fire ants, snakes, gators, sticker bushes, varmits of every kind and scorpions.

The only thing that really annoyed the living CRAP out of me was that you couldn't get a decent BAGEL in or around St. Louis (this was probably around '93). So I made my girlfriend (now my wife) run to H&H in the City and Fedex me out a couple dozen with cream cheese (shmears all around).

It was a huge hit.

The liberals have taken over all of the nicest areas in the country (climate-wise)!

You bet, thats exactly what has and is happening.

I personally refuse to leave my little bit of paradise in California and we love it. Wouldn't leave for anything as we have been to most places in this great country.

You can run but you can't hide. Its time that folks stayed put and take a stand, or else we will all be living on barren tundra wasteland.

I concur with WIMom; Eastern Wisconsin is a great place to live, but there are big drawbacks:

1) Property taxes are through the roof!! I don't know the average, but they're about 2-3 times higher than other states in the Midwest.
2) The humidity can be annoying around here, but it's not bad for me.
3) As WIMom mentioned, do NOT live in Milwaukee or Dane County! The local city councils there are bastions of liberal idiocy.
4) Wisconsin winters can be a royal pain, but if you like snow, it's great.

There are positives to add to WIMom's list.
1) The sales tax for most areas is very low; for Sheboygan County (where I live, halfway between Green Bay & Milwaukee) sales tax is 5.0%.
2) There are plenty of conservative, small town places to settle.
3) If yah like tah drink beer an eat brats, Wisconsin iss da state to be in, hey!

One more thing: If you aren't a Packer fan, be prepared; Packer fans are unlike any other group I know. They're a different breed of fan.

Ah, Virginia. I love the place. Unfortunately, I think I'm seeing some cracks in the conservative armor.
