FBI: Explosion Aboard Airbus

CNN quotes the White House, to wit: The FBI believes there was an explosion aboard the American Airlines A-300 which crashed this morning in Queens, NY. They are investigating in an attempt to learn the source of the explosion.

The only going for this crash is the fact that the government is desparate to call it a isolated incident. The plane barely hit the ground before they were sure their were no terrorists involved. The economy just cannot stand another terrorist attack right now.

my frat brother works for United, and he thinks the reason airbus crashes so often is all the 'puters on board...of course, in this case, it wouldn't make the engine fall off... or for that matter, the tail separate.

No, I'm not an truly indoctrinated system dude. I have worked around aviation for 19 years in the military, and KNOW that the investigation teams will find out what brought the aircraft down. They haven't even retrieved the flight recorders yet fer Chrissake. This could be nothing more than an actual aircraft accident. I've seen too many weenies like you guys come and go ... all had theories, all were full of hot air.

All your supposition about stinger missiles, conspiracy and boogie men in towels makes you look like fools. You want to whip the people on here into a frenzy, which makes you no better than the people we're at war with. The key to a truly open minded professional is a diligent pursuit of the real verifiable facts!

The reason I logged on to FR was to read the opinions and thoughts of my fellow freepers. I have enough intelligence to ferret out what might be speculation or real hard facts. If you are not comfortable with the discussions, you can turn on CNN or any other media outlet to get the "real facts"
As for me, I will do both, read what my fellow freepers are posting, and listen to what the media is saying.
I trust the people here a more than I do the mainstream media anyway. Some have some great instincts on this forum!

Probably not a coincidence, agreed. But the intelligence community also does not simply start making wild accusations until one seems to stick.

It's been a little over 4 hours since this crash! Give it time, they will get to the bottom of it.

Who says they will get to the bottom of it? What about TWA 800? How long? 6 months? A year? Two years? All I say is that there are plenty of ways to sabotage an airplane. You don't need a bomb. Just as the terrorist have demonstrated there are plenty of ways to to bring down a building or to hijack a plane. I think that we are not giving the terrorist enough credit for their creativity up until this point. I think that the Anthrax in the mail bit is pretty imagenative too. I think we should assume the worst.

Amen to that, ladyinred! One need only look at a few archived threads to see how many FReepers' instincts came to be true.

That is correct. However, there is a much larger heat signature from a low flying (as in taking off) aircraft than one that is in flight. Also, the engines are at nearly full power for a takeoff then throttled back (run cooler) after take off. Given the data, I, for one, would not be overly surprised to see it as a stinger hit. The area just beyond the runway is relativly abandoned. And, there is the small psychological impact that it is an "American" Airlines plane again.

This also begs the question, what is to be gained? A short glimpse at the state of the economy as a result of the groundings from 911 is an indication of the kind of impact that the aerospace industry has on the economy.

I expect that there will be a prononcement of mechanical failure, even though it looks mysteriously like a terrorist hit to me.

Besides, the experts declared that it was a mechanical problem just 45 minutes after the crash....without viewing the wreckage or gathering facts.....Based on that type of analysis I believe us rank amatuers can venture a theory or two....heck, without evidence I could probably field a dozen....

Going back to my bunker now, tinfoil hat firmly in place.....

That was my first thought, too. But, at least one person would have seen it, and we haven't heard anything like that from eyewitnesses.
