[history]
She said she was our best friend while all the time she was embracing our enemies. Now she seems to want to make up. And we are probably going to continue our relationship with her -- she's got what we crave. But the truth is, she's not that attractive. And actually, we could live without her.

Thousands.

Nice thought, but I still like the thought of the U.S. President asking the question "Saudi who?" at a press conference after we'd sucked them dry of every barrel.

We do NOT need their oil. While 99 cents a gallon gas is nice, I would pay double that just for the satisfaction of knowing that those fanatical, woman-abusing, Christian-murdering, enslaving ex-Bedouin were back living in camel-hair tents where they belong, and for the knowledge that our government was no longer supporting them. We only prop up the Saudis because we see them as a kind of "insurance" against Saddam Hussein, but sooner or later we're going to have to pay the piper for that particular tune. Better on our time than his, but our gov't needs to be making preparations over the long haul for *no more Saudi oil.*

Saudi Arabia is 10% of current production but 25% of all proven reserves. That's an important note. We do want someone in place over there that we can deal with.

Not only can we live without Saudi Oil, we need to just go take Saddam out. What are we afraid of with him? Because the U.S. is a republic, not an empire. Understand?
Of course but how about the idea that we need to finish the job that was started during Dcsert Storm or do you think that was the act of an empire too?

"..WE JUST SEIZE THE OIL FIELDS.."
Wonderful idea. The world would love us if we could gaurantee the rest of the world $10 per barrel oil. Why not!

Wiping out Saddam and the Iraqi people was not the objective.Just to be clear- I said take Saddam out, not to do anything to the Iraqi people. That being said, the rest of your post has validity and my earlier comment did not say that I thought the US did everything right during Desert Storm.

[don't we have oil wells in texas?]
Yes indeed we do. In fact, the main reason that they can't be pumped is federal regulation. East Texas old timers say that there's a veritable lake of oil (the Caddo discovery of '32) which has been off limits for pumping through existing wells since Nixon's "energy crisis". The ppb of Texas/Louisiana oil can't be lowered due to federal regulation and therefore, it can't be sold because foreign oil is cheaper.

That's assuming we do business with them. Look Russia and the Caspian area have enough oil for the "free" world. Let's strike up a deal with the countries in that area. Leave OPEC out in the cold. They won't have any buyers for their oil.
Mexico, too produces oil...we could buy exclusivly from them to boost their economy and thereby curb the influx of unemployed Mexicans to our southern states.
The real crux of the matter is if our populations is willing for pay $2.50/gallon for gas.
