My pastor did a nice job this morning in giving some perspective to the Harry Potter phenomenon we are all facing. The Law states the evil of witchcraft (check Deut 18:10-12). Anyone who is into this lifestyle is on a straight path to hell. Those who do not know Jesus can be easily misled by the Satanic lure of Harry Potter. I was squirming in my seat as he spoke about the Satanic background of Harry Potter and how we should avoid anything that is evil and does not glorify Jesus. I have 2 beautiful girls who have read Harry Potter and my older daughter has seen the film. My wife and I have both read all the books and we intend to see the film with our younger daughter. We both enjoy the books and are waiting for the fifth one to come out. My mom has been on the "Harry Potter is evil" bandwagon for about a year now. I have had frank discussions with my daughters about what is wrong with Harry and how real world witchcraft is straight from hell. I might point out here that those of you who do not believe in real Satanic forces in this world are probably in for a rude awakening. After this Law lesson our Pastor switched to the problem of legalism which is also very easy to fall into. If you think about it, anything that does not glorify Jesus is a waste of time (Football, Golf, Star Wars, Monsters Inc. etc.). If you take legalism to its extreme we should all be Amish. Lets face it we are part of this world so is Harry Potter. A good compromise might be to talk to your children and enjoy the special effects of the movie and the fantasy of the books. Help your children to separate fantasy from reality and Satan from Jesus. P.S. Those of you who dont know Jesus WATCH OUT !!!
What about pretend and sleight of hand? I know several Christian "magicians" who do shows for kids at VBS and church camps. But, then, that is not as classy or "high cultured" as football. LOL
Yeah, right. Next thing you're going to tell me Lord of the Rings and Santa are too.
Look at comment 4h on THIS thread... Guy thinks 'The Hobbit' and 'Star Wars' are about pedophilia
I believe it. I went to grad school with a classmate who thought *everything* she read was about lesbians. Welcome to the world of postmodernism.
If you think Santa and Satan are the same, seek professional help... quickly!
BTW, ever heard of a fellow named *Saint* Nicholas?
But, does he EVER say it's because he has 'special powers' that they don't have?
Things to be gotten by 'wishing' really hard?
Things conjured by saying special words? (and if you're speaking: to whom?)
Casper, Star Wars, etc. didn't not advocate witchcraft. Some posters have said that they enjoyed Star Wars, even though it advocates atheism. I would suggest that they re-examine that "enjoyment".
My twelve-year old has gone from reading about horses to devouring Harry Potter.
When some of our kids are twenty-five, into their nth relationship and spiritually lost, we might be able to figure out why. We never lead by example. We never separated good from bad.
What are parents doing reading five Potter books. Do you have anything else useful to do?
Scoff if you will: this is a serious issue.
Religion alone does not provide the reason. It's not just about a lack of Jesus. It is largely a warped and anti-social cultural perspective from which witchcraft was spawned and which witchcraft perpetuates.
Sounds like New York to me!
CORRECTION: didn't
Focus on the Family has resources to help sort this out; info is available on their web site as well as by ordering books they offer there. The Elijah List also recommends strongly against involving one's self in it. Look for the November message from Steve Schultz on this, at their web site. Or I can FReepmail it to anyone who asks.

"The Easter Bunny brings lots of good times for kids to eat or play with!"
"If you trust in Jesus, he will take you to Heaven!"
Elsie, dear, most kids understand that the man is just pretending. Just as they understand that HP is pretend. The ones who don't get it are too little to understand the concept of magic and so aren't being led "astray."
I'm so sorry you don't understand that it is all pretend. (And, if you quote nuttiness from that Onion article to me now, I'm gonna throw up.)
The main point is that not all Christians agree with you, and you have no business condemning those of us who come to other thoughtful conclusions. It simply isn't your job. *g*
We explained to our kids the underlying theology behind Star Wars before we viewed said movie. Exhorted them to enjoy the movie, and to be inspired to do better in service to our God than Mr. Lucas did in service to his.
I'm on HP III myself, now. They seem to be comic books without pictures, day-glo art in words. After a while, you just want to read the Bible and talk with real people in order to relish the richness of reality. I suspect the HP books could push borderline schizophrenic kids over the edge ... but intend to make sure my younger two kids meet Mr. Potter when they are mature enough.
(pssst, Elsie! Harry Potter is make believe, he does nothing....)
If you can't explain this, Santa Claus or no, then *you* have a much bigger problem than fantasy. Anyone with a personal relationship with JC should be able to handle this question with conviction and ease. It was certainly no issue with my four munchkins.
