A Possible Solution to the Harry Potter Problem
marbren

Posted on 11/25/2001 10:07:37 AM PST by marbren

My pastor did a nice job this morning in giving some perspective to the Harry Potter phenomenon we are all facing. The Law states the evil of witchcraft (check Deut 18:10-12). Anyone who is into this lifestyle is on a straight path to hell. Those who do not know Jesus can be easily misled by the Satanic lure of Harry Potter. I was squirming in my seat as he spoke about the Satanic background of Harry Potter and how we should avoid anything that is evil and does not glorify Jesus. I have 2 beautiful girls who have read Harry Potter and my older daughter has seen the film. My wife and I have both read all the books and we intend to see the film with our younger daughter. We both enjoy the books and are waiting for the fifth one to come out. My mom has been on the "Harry Potter is evil" bandwagon for about a year now. I have had frank discussions with my daughters about what is wrong with Harry and how real world witchcraft is straight from hell. I might point out here that those of you who do not believe in real Satanic forces in this world are probably in for a rude awakening. After this Law lesson our Pastor switched to the problem of legalism which is also very easy to fall into. If you think about it, anything that does not glorify Jesus is a waste of time (Football, Golf, Star Wars, Monsters Inc. etc.). If you take legalism to its extreme we should all be Amish. Lets face it we are part of this world so is Harry Potter. A good compromise might be to talk to your children and enjoy the special effects of the movie and the fantasy of the books. Help your children to separate fantasy from reality and Satan from Jesus. P.S. Those of you who don’t know Jesus WATCH OUT !!!

those who practice magic arts

What about pretend and sleight of hand? I know several Christian "magicians" who do shows for kids at VBS and church camps. But, then, that is not as classy or "high cultured" as football. LOL

We once lived in Amish Country.....if you're a man, it's great.....women are not treated with respect.......I'm not a FemiNatz by the way...just lived there long enough to see their ways. EXAMPLE: 8PM Friday Night in December of 1987 Winter Storm in full swing......doorbell rings...it's the Amish furniture maker at the door...unannounced...we were shocked with the weather....but understood with their no telephone policy....YET DELIGHTED to get our living room tables, sofa, and chairs delivered so unexpectedly. My husband dons his winter coat and says "Here, let me help you !" but the Amish guy tells him no thank you he has his own help...goes outside and tells his help to carry the items inside.....man comes in, sits down and chats with us.....next thing we know two 40ish women lift in the furniture... Amish dude refuses to allow my husband to help them...also fails to help them...asks us where we want him to tell them to set things in the room.......the women are standing there but he has to give the directive....we ask them to sit down...man orders them into their buggy (with attached furniture wagon) Amish dude chats awhile longer leaving the women in the blizzard....for about 15 more minutes.....he finally leaves and Hubby tells me " Boy I bet you're glad to be married to me and not one of them!!....I'm a prince compared to that dude!"

Hate to tell you, but the Necronomicon and Cthulhu are fiction.

Yeah, right. Next thing you're going to tell me Lord of the Rings and Santa are too.

You think HE's nuts?

Look at comment 4h on THIS thread... Guy thinks 'The Hobbit' and 'Star Wars' are about pedophilia

I believe it. I went to grad school with a classmate who thought *everything* she read was about lesbians. Welcome to the world of postmodernism.

...and thbe kids are just FASCINATED aren't they?!

But, does he EVER say it's because he has 'special powers' that they don't have?
Things to be gotten by 'wishing' really hard?
Things conjured by saying special words? (and if you're speaking: to whom?)

Harry Potter is no more dangerous than Casper the Ghost

Casper, Star Wars, etc. didn't not advocate witchcraft. Some posters have said that they enjoyed Star Wars, even though it advocates atheism. I would suggest that they re-examine that "enjoyment".

My twelve-year old has gone from reading about horses to devouring Harry Potter.

When some of our kids are twenty-five, into their nth relationship and spiritually lost, we might be able to figure out why. We never lead by example. We never separated good from bad.

What are parents doing reading five Potter books. Do you have anything else useful to do?

Scoff if you will: this is a serious issue.

Religion alone does not provide the reason. It's not just about a lack of Jesus. It is largely a warped and anti-social cultural perspective from which witchcraft was spawned and which witchcraft perpetuates.

15.  Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

Sounds like New York to me!

But I thought that casper the ghost was just a way to get satan into your homes by means of a cute little ghost, remember anything that is not of god is of satan, its so black and white you make the decision!

Compromise with those who glorify the devil is always a dead end street. If you want to be free of the effects of the compromise, stay away from anything to do with Potter, Ouija boards, tarot cards, etc. Please. I say this as one who knows whereof I speak. The devil has his kingdom, just as God does, and he uses any tool he can to draw people into his snares. This is not a harmless thing. It is not something to idly fill one's mind with as a fun amusement. It is more than flirting with the occult. If you want to be pure and stand before Jesus with a clear conscience now and at the day of reckoning, have zero tolerance for harry potter.

Focus on the Family has resources to help sort this out; info is available on their web site as well as by ordering books they offer there. The Elijah List also recommends strongly against involving one's self in it. Look for the November message from Steve Schultz on this, at their web site. Or I can FReepmail it to anyone who asks.

"If you're a REALLY good little boy or girl, Santa will bring you lots of gifts!
But if not, you'll get a bundle of switches!"

"The Easter Bunny brings lots of good times for kids to eat or play with!"

"If you trust in Jesus, he will take you to Heaven!"

Years later.............
"(Hmuph! The Tooth Fairy turned out to be Mom; Ol' Easter Bunny was the big guys hiding stuff around and Santa turned out to be just Dad. Now then, tell me one more time: 'Why should I believe in the GOD that I can't see or feel or touch?'")

Elsie, dear, most kids understand that the man is just pretending. Just as they understand that HP is pretend. The ones who don't get it are too little to understand the concept of magic and so aren't being led "astray."

I'm so sorry you don't understand that it is all pretend. (And, if you quote nuttiness from that Onion article to me now, I'm gonna throw up.)

The main point is that not all Christians agree with you, and you have no business condemning those of us who come to other thoughtful conclusions. It simply isn't your job. *g*

We just told the kids that Harry Potter was a make-believe story with all kinds of neat trick photography and we all enjoyed it......kinda' like the old Star Wars junk. Religion never came into it

We explained to our kids the underlying theology behind Star Wars before we viewed said movie. Exhorted them to enjoy the movie, and to be inspired to do better in service to our God than Mr. Lucas did in service to his.

I'm on HP III myself, now. They seem to be comic books without pictures, day-glo art in words. After a while, you just want to read the Bible and talk with real people in order to relish the richness of reality. I suspect the HP books could push borderline schizophrenic kids over the edge ... but intend to make sure my younger two kids meet Mr. Potter when they are mature enough.

Why should I believe in the GOD that I can't see or feel or touch?

If you can't explain this, Santa Claus or no, then *you* have a much bigger problem than fantasy. Anyone with a personal relationship with JC should be able to handle this question with conviction and ease. It was certainly no issue with my four munchkins.
