A Possible Solution to the Harry Potter Problem
marbren

Posted on 11/25/2001 10:07:37 AM PST by marbren

My pastor did a nice job this morning in giving some perspective to the Harry Potter phenomenon we are all facing. The Law states the evil of witchcraft (check Deut 18:10-12). Anyone who is into this lifestyle is on a straight path to hell. Those who do not know Jesus can be easily misled by the Satanic lure of Harry Potter. I was squirming in my seat as he spoke about the Satanic background of Harry Potter and how we should avoid anything that is evil and does not glorify Jesus. I have 2 beautiful girls who have read Harry Potter and my older daughter has seen the film. My wife and I have both read all the books and we intend to see the film with our younger daughter. We both enjoy the books and are waiting for the fifth one to come out. My mom has been on the "Harry Potter is evil" bandwagon for about a year now. I have had frank discussions with my daughters about what is wrong with Harry and how real world witchcraft is straight from hell. I might point out here that those of you who do not believe in real Satanic forces in this world are probably in for a rude awakening. After this Law lesson our Pastor switched to the problem of legalism which is also very easy to fall into. If you think about it, anything that does not glorify Jesus is a waste of time (Football, Golf, Star Wars, Monsters Inc. etc.). If you take legalism to its extreme we should all be Amish. Lets face it we are part of this world so is Harry Potter. A good compromise might be to talk to your children and enjoy the special effects of the movie and the fantasy of the books. Help your children to separate fantasy from reality and Satan from Jesus. P.S. Those of you who don’t know Jesus WATCH OUT !!!

So, what's wrong with the Amish lifestyle?

It's not my lifestyle, but in many ways, I envy them.

We just told the kids that Harry Potter was a make-believe story with all kinds of neat trick photography and we all enjoyed it......kinda' like the old Star Wars junk.
Religion never came into it.

This sounds like something straight out of a Puritan sermon. Repeat after me: Harry Potter is NOT the Devil's Front Man. Harry Potter is no more dangerous than Casper the Ghost. Harry Potter is not a celebration of the Black Arts, a lure to satanism, or Volume II of the Necronomicon.

Good. Now take a Valium and get some rest.

Staying away from satanism and witchcraft is not legalism. And football, if played with the correct mindset, can glorify Jesus. Football is spiritually healthy. Withccraft is not.

A Possible Solution to the Harry Pooter Problem

The only problem with Harry Pooter is our society has become so void of anything resembling culture, people think this is good stuff.

Harry Pooter falls in the same category as many other fantasy entertainment.

More money in Hollyweird pocket

That flying motorcyle at the beginning is the most Satanic of all, we all know that real witches spells create flying motorcycles. In addition, its been known for years that real witches can create train station platforms between the real train station platforms. Real witches also have paintings with comical inhabitants that move around in them and act silly. Real witches have silly candy that are like jelly-bellys only gross. And one of the books even has dancing in it.

But then, there is some snake handling involved, so thats a plus.

Good grief. Satan makes no more of an appearance in the HP books than he does in Tolkien or Lewis or the Wizard of Oz. That's the point about legalism.

or Volume II of the Necronomicon

Hate to tell you, but the Necronomicon and Cthulhu are fiction also. I learned that at Miskatonic University back in the 60's.

For what it's worth, my mother was in line for the opening showing of Harry Potter (in costume no less!). One of the other people in line was a six-year old boy who had already read all four books three times. But it wasn't a Harry Potter book he was reading in the line; it was C.S. Lewis, the Chronicles of Narnia.

Now we have folks knocking fantasy? Fantasy is hardly a new or useless genre. There are many classic works of fantasy, including the Arthurian treatments.

Also, let's not forget that the audience for these books is children. Don't go measuring it against War and Peace.

Plus, not everything has to be "high culture." Whadda ya got against plain ol' fun?

Reminds me of a cartoon I saw once that had two old scholarly looking profs talking. The punchline: Maybe some day we'll have a university that our football team can be proud of.

IMHO, I'd much rather have my kid reading HP than playing football -- and I have nothing against football. Watch it myself (when I don't have to listen to Dennis Miller to do so).

You think HE's nuts?

Look at comment 4h on THIS thread... Guy thinks 'The Hobbit' and 'Star Wars' are about pedophilia.

FR LUNATICS Speak up...

I report - you decide:
Revelation 22

 12.  "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.
 13.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
 14.  "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.
 15.  Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
 16.  "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you  this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
 17.  The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
 18.  I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.
 19.  And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

Now; shall I trust YOU guys, or God's Word?
