VOTE IN YOUR NOMINEE FOR RINO OF THE YEAR!
CLUB FOR GROWTH ^ | 12-11-01 | STEVE MOORE

Posted on 12/11/2001 10:07:00 AM PST by KLT

We are taking nominations for our first-ever RINO (Republican in Name Only) of the year award. This award will recognize a Republican who has advanced egregious anti-growth, anti-freedom or anti-free-market policies. The "winner" may be a member of Congress or any other state or local elected official. (Sorry, our economically challenged Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill is not an elected official, so he is ineligible.)

Here are some front-runners who have already been nominated:

Governor Don Sundquist of Tennessee for repeatedly trying to enact a State income tax.

Rep. Greg Ganske (Iowa), a Republican sponsor of the Democratic bill to federalize 30,000 airport workers.

Sen. Mike Enzi, for co-sponsoring the Internet tax bill.

Sen. John McCain, for voting for a key amendment by Democratic Leader Tom Daschle and for offering his own amendment that would have gutted the Bush tax cut.

California Assemblyman Mike Briggs, for making it possible for Gov. Gray Davis to pass his tax increase budget this year.

Please fax (202-955-9466) or e-mail your nominations by 12/19/2001. You should include a few sentences about your nominee's anti-growth efforts in 2001. If you have particularly dumb quotes from the nominee that attempt to explain his actions, please include this information. We will then have a poll of our members and our Board will make the selection from the finalists.

Thank you for your nominations.

And see Michael Meyers' column of today about Bloomberg's pick for police commissioner.

He has also said he's against profiling.

It's a tradeoff, you see. Our safety for his political correctness (since he always stays nice and safe with his security detail).

So, he didn't choose to run, and I believe this is why she had no other competition. If she couldn't win honestly, there is always vote fraud to rely on. ;-)

I give Lazio credit for going up against her. In fact, Rush mentioned today about the debate in which Lazio walked toward "her" to ask her to sign a pledge--the man was crucified as giving the appearance he was threatening her.

So help me, I can't see a Dem losing a race unless there is a glitch why they can't count dead, twice, and otherwise stuff the ballot boxes.

"...there are not enough of us."

Yeah there are...a bunch of us are just over here trying to keep the RINOs from turning the GOP into the RepublicRAT Party, but we know where our FRiends are. Actually, I'm more of a libertarian, but Harry Browne's doin' such a gawdawful job giving that word a black eye, I'm lyin' low until we get ourselves a real Leader.

McCain. Statist Republicans are one thing. McCain has entered a la-la land, where he is The One True White Knight of Truth against George Bush. Sad, because I admired him 2 years ago.

John McCain. He still bears the name Republican, but has (arguably) done the most damage to the party

I agree wit youse. Jeffords defection is really screwing things up at the national level. He should be re-classified as a terrorist or something.

Doesn't the northeast s-ck. Especially New York, where Conservative party will probably endorse gun grabbing, big spending, regulation passing RINO George Pataki. If you live in New York, you might as well vote Communist. Here in Florida, we have a REAL Republican party. Hey Lab, how do you like those high taxes and fascistic gun laws?

Thanks for the reminders. Unfortunately, I just had lunch.

BTW, I never have been a Pataki fan, either now or when he first ran for governor. But his election supports the point that I was trying to make: If the Conservative Party in New York had been able to hijack the Republican Party as it tries to do on a national level, then Pataki never would have received the Republican nomination and Mario Cuhomo would probably still be governor.

Taxes? Because of Pataki, I'm only paying 8.75% state income tax, 7.25% sales tax, and a real property tax that now approaches $7000 a year. (I think I'm going to lose my lunch again.)

Despite whay you might think, the gun laws here are not all that restrictive once you move away from New York City. A handgun carry permit is still difficult to obtain, but by no means impossible under the appropriate circumstances.

no one, and I mean no one, comes even close to the despicable Mr. "30 Pieces of Silver" Jeffords. He ran as a Republican, using Republican money, using Republican resources, yet stabs the party in the back in favor of a chairmanship and the hopes of more pork for his state.

At first, I thought he'd have to be disqualified, due to his no longer being a RIN(O). But, the more I think about it, you're right. Jeffords was a RINO for part of the year, and thus merits consideration. And, although your summary doesn't even begin to quantify the damage done to the party -- giving total control of the Senate agenda and committees to the Dems -- it easily makes the case for his overwhelming deservedness of the award.

The NYS Conservative Party exists solely as a means of securing patronage jobs for its faithful. That and engaging in wicked internecine pissing contests.

Their continued ridiculous antics led me to register "no affiliation".

I actually consider myself a "conservatarian" which I define as a person who has conservative views, but doesn't force those views upon someone else or give a rat's a$$ what someone else does in the privacy of his own home, as long as his conduct does not directly infringe upon the rights of another person.

Hillary won by a wide margin due to the fact that the City comprised the majority of the electorate in 2000 and the Clintons are very popular there (firefighters and cops for NYC typically commute from upstate and Lawn Guyland). Dems always have an advantage in statewide elections, with moderate Republicans only winning in cases of low voter turnout or when Dems nominate a candidate considered unacceptable to a substantial portion of their coalition. In other words, New York is politically hopeless for all but the most liberal Republican, with even moderates having trouble at the local level.
