VOTE IN YOUR NOMINEE FOR RINO OF THE YEAR!
CLUB FOR GROWTH ^ | 12-11-01 | STEVE MOORE

Posted on 12/11/2001 10:07:00 AM PST by KLT

We are taking nominations for our first-ever RINO (Republican in Name Only) of the year award. This award will recognize a Republican who has advanced egregious anti-growth, anti-freedom or anti-free-market policies. The "winner" may be a member of Congress or any other state or local elected official. (Sorry, our economically challenged Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill is not an elected official, so he is ineligible.)

Here are some front-runners who have already been nominated:

Governor Don Sundquist of Tennessee for repeatedly trying to enact a State income tax.

Rep. Greg Ganske (Iowa), a Republican sponsor of the Democratic bill to federalize 30,000 airport workers.

Sen. Mike Enzi, for co-sponsoring the Internet tax bill.

Sen. John McCain, for voting for a key amendment by Democratic Leader Tom Daschle and for offering his own amendment that would have gutted the Bush tax cut.

California Assemblyman Mike Briggs, for making it possible for Gov. Gray Davis to pass his tax increase budget this year.

Please fax (202-955-9466) or e-mail your nominations by 12/19/2001. You should include a few sentences about your nominee's anti-growth efforts in 2001. If you have particularly dumb quotes from the nominee that attempt to explain his actions, please include this information. We will then have a poll of our members and our Board will make the selection from the finalists.

Thank you for your nominations.

Their continued ridiculous antics led me to register "no affiliation".

Funny that you should say that. I first joined the conservative party back in the mid 1980's when the leadership of our local Republican Party had to spend a well-deserved stint in the Federal pokey for fraud, bribery, kick-backs, and racketeering.

In Florida we have 1. No state income tax. 2. Moderate property taxes a state sales tax that peaks at 6.5% in Dade County. We also do not have a car tax. We don't need "letters of recommendation" to own a handgun license, as there is NO gun registration. Our concealed carry permits are on a shall issue basis, so that the transplanted Communists from New York who dominate politics in Broward and Palm Beach can't say no when you apply (Florida CCPs also have reciprocity with 18 other states).

Another great thing about Florida is the fact that the Republican Party is conservative, the Democratic party is liberal and moderates have NO POWER in either.

Nevertheless, it is awfully humid down here, the bread is HORRIBLE and it can get quite boring. I miss NYC for everything except the politics, the regulation and the taxes.

Rudy would have beat Hitlery. He seems to be pretty healthy these days. What's the scoop on that?

Rudy thought his marital problems would hurt his chances of winning.

Health-wise, he's in good shape; expect Rudy to be CIA chief by the end of next year.

Are you from Nassau County? Is Tom Gulotta still alive or have they finally sent him up the river where he belongs?

NY Conservative Party needs to get rid of the crook from Bay Ridge, Mike Long. Find a nice Protestant from upstate.

Answer: Bill Paxon, former congressman from Buffalo. I'm sick of the NY GOP running corrupt fools from downstate with vowels at the end of their names. :-)

Paxon dropped out because he's gay and Newt was going to rat him out.

And, although your summary doesn't even begin to quantify the damage done to the party -- giving total control of the Senate agenda and committees to the Dems -- it easily makes the case for his overwhelming deservedness of the award.

Thank you. I would have continued with your correct description of the collossal damage he has done to the party, as well as the country. His switch clearly does not reflect the mood of the country. I just thought that qualifying him for the RINO award would lead one to understand that he deserves this award.

It was a "political marriage" ala Rock Hudson.

BTW - They don't live together.

Gulotta is a lame duck for a few more weeks, but no time in the pokey for him. Suffolk is only marginally less corrupt, but barely. As a fellow paesan' (I'm making an assumption based on your handle), I heartily agree with your "upstate protestant" comment. These damn wops downstate must miss the old country so much, they just can't let go of camorrista and mafiosi style local political machines.

It is the bane of our race. Unfortunatly, my Cuban Republican neighbors on the Miami-Dade County Commission seem to suffer from the same affliction.

I'd like to change my vote from McCain to Jeffords. Even though Jeffords was only a RINO part of the year (which is what I originally considered), his switch tipped the balance of power in the committee assignments amongst other things for 2001. But McCain a close second.

I still think Jeffords should be a candidate - for years of loyal "service" as a RINO prior to June/2001.

Dittos! That was the first name in my head when I saw the post ". . .Rino of the Year!"

You get my 2nd, 3rd or 4th, on our native windbag son. I don't know if you are old enough to remember the comic strip "Little Abner", but there was a character named Senator Foghorn, or maybe it was Fogbound. Anyway, the character fit Warner to a T.

FReegards,
