Outrage from New Hampshire!
Our friends at sister site PoliticsNH.com brought this offensive political cartoon to our attention. It was drawn by Mike Mariand and printed in today's Concord Monitor.
We don't have a problem with those who criticize President George W. Bush. In fact, we've taken a few shots at the Commander-in-Chief ourselves, when we thought he deserved rebuke. But to use the horrific September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center that killed almost 3,000 innocent civilians to make a political point about the president's budget is disgusting. If Mariand were drawing cartoons in 1941, would he have drawn President Franklin Roosevelt piloting one of the Japanese fighter planes that participated in the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor to convey his opinion on an issue of the day?
If you would like to tell the folks at the Concord Monitor what you think about their political cartoon, we urge you to e-mail Mark Travis, the editorial page editor at mtravis@cmonitor.com. (2/8)
"To the Editor;
If this:
[copy of "cartoon" inserted]
is an example of editorial content that meets with your approval, I would be more than afraid to see what you decide to cut! On the other hand, I probably would be safe in assuming that the copy that winds up in File 13 is written by decent, fair-minded individuals who would never presume to "hijack" the tragedy that is 9/11 in a sick attempt to further their political agendas or their careers.
I do believe that you owe your readers a public apology for insulting the sensibilities of the 9/11 survivors, and the rest of this country who support them. Even if I supported the sentiments of the cartoonist, the method of delivery would still leave a very nasty taste in my mouth. If you were aiming for a "bullseye," you missed. And the bull is very angry about where the arrow landed instead. I'd be running for cover from that bull if I were in your shoes. And I'd watch wear I stepped. No doubt the bull by-products are pretty deep where you're standing!"

and where I'm from!
Seems like Mike's gonna be saying "who let the dogs out".
Oh snot! A bloody typo! I hate when they sneak past me!! I am not a well woman lately, and my brain is not running at full capacity. You all just witnessed a prime example of what happens when I'm not "all here." Cripes!!
Has anyone heard back directly from the Concord Monitor or any of the advertisers ? Other than the pseudo apology from the editor ?
Jim
THat being said, I hope the cartoonist is right. I hope Bush's budget is the beginning of the end for SS.
Pleasant dreams ....
The cartoon by Mike Mariand, depicting President Bush dive bombing an aircraft into the WTC, and published in your paper today is very...interesting.
Why do you people think it's ok to use the worst disaster in US history as a vehicle with which to take childish political potshots at ANYONE?
I've been amazed these past months at the way the reasoning capacity of the self-styled left-wing "intellectual elite" has dropped exponentially in proportion to the dramatic rise the popularity of conservative thought.
This cartoon is proof that the left-wing has reached a new low in intellectual capacity. Mike Mariand and his ilk have now lost not only the moral high ground - not that the left ever really had that to begin with - but the intellectual high ground as well. By publishing this offensive, pitiful, attempt at "humor", your paper joins Marion and friends way down at the bottom of the Wexler food chain.
So...how does it feel to have your eyebrows growing in the vicinity of your chins, you disgusting individuals?
