Kewllll. I can't tell. Is it an Ekranoplan, or just a Flareplane?
To: Victoria Delsoul
I know that one! That's the Aurora. The fastest aircraft ever made and still not acknowledged by our government.

I remember seeing this one at Ft. Rucker as a kid, c. 1967.
The AH-1 Cobra was just operational, this was the developmental next-generation attack helicopter that never went anywhere. I think it was the "Cheyenne", and that there's one at the rotary wing museum at Rucker (I was there 7-8 years ago).

I'm 50 and I guess it shows how geeky I was that I remember alot of these. I used to build alot of plastic models back when. I remeber the vertical 2 prop model well. I watched one try to land and it took about 10 minutes from 10 ft. to touch down. The pilot had no way of knowing just how close he was to the ground. Very high pucker factor. One of the very small delta wings was from Germany in WWII. It was dropped by a bomber and had about 2-3 minutes of rocket power. Had to belly land in a field as it had no gear. It flew so fast by prop fighters, it didn't have time to manuver for a shot before having to glide back to the field. Alot of the prop-jet planes were to test jets because in the early days, they tended to flame out and not restart, ergo the propeller to get home. VTOL probably had the most prototypes ever. Probably several hundred since the 50's and we end up with Osprey. The ones flying with short wings right above the water are using ground effects to come in under radar lowand fast. Thats as high as they go. Most are Russian. Ruskies have one that is as big as the Spruce Goose in dry dock.

I believe the Cheyenne was in competition and lost to the Apache.

My mistake- it was cancelled in favor of the AH-1G Cobra.

I think that's the USAF's 'Goblin', Brett66.
I don't know anything else about it but it's name.

That thing would give a pit crew headaches...
