Cinematic arts (yes, arts) in this country have deteriorated to the point where it won't be possible to make a wacky offbeat art film on Alamo with an original take on the events, a straight up Western a la John Ford, or a Shakespearean tragedy. We'll be served politically correct mindless Cecil De Mille spectacles with a pseudo sophisticated plot, and who needs those.

I may be wrong, but I think that Baldwin has ALREADY played Travis, in a TV movie version of the Alamo about a decade ago. I though he was better than Lawrence Harvey was in the part -- closer to the right age, for one thing.

Very bad acting, and extremely politically correct...Santa Ana bad man...rest of Mexican army oppressed and forced to capture Alamo by bad man.

It seems to me that you entirely forget the characterization of Santa Ana and the Mexican army in the John Wayne movie. You must know that Wayne deeply respected Hispanics, to the extent that he kept marrying them! In his movie, Santa Ana is shown as a dictator, but much more chivalrous than he actually was. Nothing about executing the few survivors and burning the bodies, for example.

As far as the soldiers were concerned, I remember the scene where some of the Texans are talking about how they respected them, that they 'felt proud of them even while' they were killing them, that it 'speaks well of a man' that he would be willing to die for what he thinks is right. I guess this means that John Wayne is just too PC for you.

And bad acting in a government created historical recreation, I am shocked, shocked, I tell you!

John Wayne wrote and directed the movie you're referring to, or are we just projecting? Actors are hired help who play (usually) two dimensional fictional characters in movies and are typically held in low esteem by producers who hire screenwriters and directors and whether or not they "deeply respect Hispanics" don't mean squat to nobody!

Not too familiar with this movie, are we? The movie was a pure John Wayne production, he created it, produced it, directed nearly all of it, and, as producer, was in control of the writers. When Young Americans for Freedom had its rally filling the old Madison Square Garden in 1962 they presented a special award to John Wayne for this great patriotic work.

I guess that the fact that I read about this rally in the NY Times when it happenned, joined my chapter of YAF the next week, and had a recording of the speeches at the rally gave me a bit of an advantage on this subject, not to mention watching it on AMC where they emphasized the fact that it was strictly Wayne's baby!

A post-modern, self conscious art film attempt could have been made of this theme in the 1960s, early 70s (although in the 70s it would already be politically correct with some former black football player or Freddie Fender in it.) Now it'll be post-modern self conscious politically correct. Dolores Del Rio need not apply! I loved those Westerns with Dolores or one of her clones; she was there because a Hispanic momma was called for in the script, not because of somebody's guilt feelings towards the Mexicans. And while it would be fun to see a film post-modernistically subverting the Dolores Del Rio stereotype, nothing of the sort is possible nowadays. It's sincere guilt ridden affirmative action all the way and maybe Howard will present it in a subtle way but he'll present it just the same, you can bet on it.
