This is awful!
30 March 2002 | Me

No, this is awful!
I don't know where anything is anymore!
Where are the sidebars?
I used to go straight to them
to find out
what was going on.

I can't find anything, anymore!
I just logged on to this mess.
I'll try again later when I calm down.

Let me lay this out simple and clear. Every one of you whining a-holes better have thrown a few bucks into the kitty during the last fund raiser. One of the reasons why Jim and John have to work their software interface magic is because there are MANY MANY freeloaders here who suck up resources and don't give back a thing. The demand grows, the network resources are stretched, the costs rise and the equipment investments are evaluated ...

Never mind, it's none of your business. Everything John and Jim do is with the FR users in mind. EVERYTHING. It's simple ... nobody is forcing you to lay on a bed of nails, nobody is forcing you to stick a screw driver into your left eye, nobody is forcing you to be drawn and quartered, and nobody is forcing you to endure the Bataan Death March torture that is the new Free Republic. Log off, and don't come back.

Please.

I think your comments are well-founded. In the woodworking world, there's a site called Badger Pond that's been maintained by an individual who's kept it very simple with no fancy stuff. All the other woodworking sites, including those by the publishers, prettied their sites up to the point of being also-rans.

Hey, I just looked at this new FR for the first time about 10 minutes ago. At first I was confused, but after exploring it and changing some settings as explained, I see that it is a vast improvement.

Take some time to look around, this is great.

The Flag graphic is horrendous. It makes scrolling like watching Moulin Rouge on fast forward.

I don't know if this has been posted already..the threads too big for me to read it in its entirety..but the self-search option does not work in my netscape ..only internet explorer. In netscape, the background gif shows up. If I click on view source, everything is there... WEIRD

Without the time saving sidebar FR doesn't work for me.

Your sidebar probably has these instructions in it, but here is what to do to get the sidebars of your choice.

  1. Click on "Topics" in the upper right hand corner.
  2. Click on the bold-faced title of the topic you want in your sidebar.
  3. In the Left Margin you will see "You do not subscribe to this topic. "
  4. Click on the "Click here to subscribe." text.
VIOLA! The Sidebar is Here!

I think it's a give and take. Some will find it confusing, some find it interesting. It'll probably be tweaked to improve it quite a bit.

BTW, What's this "Florida Have You No Shame" on your home page? Dude, we're responsible for fighting off the AlGore/JJ/Daily lawyer brigade after your state gave all your electors to Gore! :^)

Oh this is just pissy. I don't want to choose a sidebar topic. I want to know what FR posters think is the latest and greatest breaking news.

Well joanie, I'm not a whiner. If something doesn't work for me I just don't utilize. This will cull the membership.

Latest Posts/Threads (whatever) takes FOREVER to load. I feel like I'm on a dial-up again!

I *am* on dialup. FR used to be one of the fastest pages (2nd only to google) for my computer to load.

Now I stare into space, wiping away drool while I wait on a self-search or a latest posts page to load.

On top of that, I need to keep FR open on *two* pages --one open to News/Activism, the other open to General Interests. I do this so I won't miss any good replies.

I came to FR from usenet because it was one of the few forums that was fast and simple. Now it is slow and complicated.

I'm just sure I am missing something newsworthy. Oh well, practice, practice, practice!

Yeah, I think that once I figure where all the stuff is I'll like this better.

I set my Breaking News and Front Page on the sidebar, but the Front Page appears above the Breaking.
Do you know how to change it where Breaking in on top??......

Anyone???

You get a standing ovation. Best advice today.

Ha ha ha I take back my accusation that you work for the government. Of course to the libertarians, this will only confirm that you DO. :)

Go to your profile and opt out of any location. Then the blatant unwanted message at the top of the forum will go away. You will be stateless, but momentarily happy.

In the New FR Order!

I know that you have put an enormous amount of time and effort into this new format. Nevertheless, it doesn't work well for me. The screen is too busy. The print is too small. I subscribed to Breaking News first and now it is at the bottom of my selections instead of the top. If I wanted to do polls, I would go to the url that a thread pointed me to -- I don't like the poll question taking up the room where the sidebars were. The old format was simple and all the information was compact. Now, I'm certain that I will miss important news items because of the layout of the page. Is there any way you can make an option to go back to the old layout? We were able to use the beta format option this past week or so along with the regular format.

Before, when clicking on latest posts, I could immediately see the titles of at least 50 posts, and a good proportion of them were visible on the screen. Now I can see but the first two or three posts in narrow column down the center of the screen. And the thing took forever to load. Not a good thing.

This is very, very true.

And what happened to "Find in Forum?"

On the bright side, I had 11,943 comments to view when I logged on this morning, and I can change my oil while new-style pages are loading.
