On a recent visit to my brother's house in Charlotte, NC, I saw the following on my sister-in-law's car:

My question is exactly what does the "Well-behaved women rarely make history" statement suppose to mean? Any opinions on this out there?

In case you had not guessed, my sister-in-law is a little on the liberal side...

It means: "I can behave as poorly as I want and when someone calls me on it, I shall say it is my political statement."

It means that women that are not well-behaved make history more frequently.

I think she means for women to get ahead, make waves. Being a conformist doesn't get you anywhere or remebered. I guess she means be a Hillary.

I tend to agree with this. It is also true of men, by the way. History is made by those who aren't afraid to make waves. Women are singled out here because they are traditionally have been more encouraged to be "well-behaved" than men have.

"Well-behaved women rarely make-up history."

I think she is defending the honor of Doris Goodwin....

I hope she's a nice wife to your brother!!!

When I see bumper stickers like that, I imagine the woman behind them probably orders her husband around like a servant.

And Mother Teresa. Very well behaved, very loved, and she really made a difference.

The first example that comes to my mind is Jean d'Arc. Or the english version: Joan of Arc. She made history in a big way by misbehaving(as they saw it at the time) so badly, that they burned her alive to make an example.

But in this case, I think this bumper sticker is meant as a mean spirited criticism of the 1950's american style housewife steriotype. I don't care for the bumper sticker at all.
