2000 people per acre? Fairly easy if you put them all in high rise condos. 500 families at 1000 square feet per family would only require about 14 floors. Of course, you might need to double that to allow for service things like elevators, hallways, etc. and you're only at 25 or 30 floors.

Now you might complain about only 1000 square feet, but I imagine these folks would consider that generous. After all, it's for the environment. And, you wouldn't need a garage for the car either because you'll be riding mass transit.

Believe this or not, but I've seen debates from those who call themselves democratic socialists who believe that you'll love this much more than single family housing. That's after the mandatory re-education program, of course.

Wondering where I'll plant my corn!

LOL! Looks like they won't be lettin' you do that. You might use fertilizer or pesticides on that there corn and well, that just wouldn't be right. We're the Sierra Club and we know how to live right, ya hear?

What a bunch of scum. I'm proud to say I have never, ever, given money to this bunch of yahoos.

Considering how insane the Eco-Nazis are; I am sure that they are talking about puting 2000 people on ONE FLOOR, per acre.

IG: Looks like they are trying to fuel the Smart Growth fire with money...and then sew it up all under Fed control. Viola, a socialist, centrally planned economy.

All: Welcome to Smart Growth. Basically it is communist central planning with an enviro twist. They draw a line around all the cities in the state, and allow little or no development outside the 'growth boundaries'. They take 50% or more of the land outside the boundaries and convert it to conservation areas or 'green spaces' and the rest for 'sustainable farming.' The only people allowed to live in rural areas are farmers, and they are completely controlled by the govt.

Those inside the 'growth boundary' are in for even a greater treat. Yes, the Sierra Club wants 500 families per acre, but guaranteed you won't own your own house. In Portland Oregon, the national test tube for Smart Growth, if you have a vacant lot, or your house burns down, you can't (re)build a house on it. You've got to build a minimum of a 6 unit apt. complex.

They are also deliberately letting their streets go and not fixing them while pumping money into public transportation. In 25 years, Oregon wants to eliminate cars alltogether. I would assume that private property ownership is on the list for abolishment too at some point.

Eventually, they want to force 95% of the population into the main cities. Of course, freezing development drives up housing prices, limits jobs, and creates a 'good old boy' network of businesses that don't have to compete. That limited environment obviously will mean more people than resources, leaving our beloved govt to 'distribute' those resources as it sees fit: jobs, goods, housing, transportation, you name it (communism anyone?).

Sounds surreal, but it's happening in Oregon right now. Here are some links with articles on the topic. Take the time to read it. The enviros are pushing it at every level of govt across the nation with some very slick marketing tactics. They are also sneaking it in under people's noses before they even know what's going on. That's how they have done it in Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Next to anti-gunners, this is the biggest threat out there IMO. Anyone who cares about property rights should get up to speed on this as fast as they can.

There was a similar federal program in effect from about 1965 to 1974 in which the federal government gave grants to local government to prepare master plans and adopt zoning ordinances. It was known, after its section number in whatever the act was, as the 701 Program. The program didn't work very well and in 1975 it was combined with other "categorical" programs, such as Urban Renewal, into the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). The CDBG program receives about $4bil. per year, but the funding level has not increased much in many years because it gets poor marks from GAO and other evaluators.

Indeed it does get my blood boiling and indeed we do need to spread the word to all who will hear.

Fed Government control of zoning is coming your way - unless you act to stop it now. Where is the item about the Sierra Club really wanting 500 people per acre as their ultimate "land use" plan?????

(JH2 - if you see fit - can you send your King of Ping pings about this atrocity???) Thanks.

And what is the vision that animates the "Growing Smart" guidelines that served as a basis for the Senate bill? The Sierra Club last year conducted an exercise in which it attempted to define the optimum density for American cities. It came up with a figure of 500 families per acre. As economist Randal O'Toole of the Thoreau Institute has pointed out, this is roughly twice the density of the densest parts of Manhattan--on a par with the densest cities of Asia.

From the above article. Pretty scary.

OH, my God! 500 families per acre? But not Hitlery and her troops! All the socialists/communists would have their summer homes and their winter homes and their DC homes and their New York homes and lands-------while the rest of us are crammed into Asian like squalor filled ghettos!

This is a tremendous winning issue that MUST be used by Republicans everywhere! The Dems have side with the "government planners" in every area of our lives - and now they are getting down to the final "chip" of telling people where they will live and where they will not live - and people will rise up in this nation against that - if they only know about it!!! SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!

You got that right! Golf while you can - there will probably be a zoning ordinance to outlaw them eventually.
