SACRAMENTO -- Sweeping rules that environmentalists say will ease global warming by cutting vehicle emissions is moving through the Legislature, despite well-financed opposition from business interests who say such a solution is impractical and could add $3,500 to the price of an SUV.

I did an analysis of the pollution caused by the production of a gallon of milk and it's worse than that produced by burning a gallon of gas. You're right, and I didn't count beef production.

Just when you think California cannot be more insane - they prove us wrong. (Not speaking to regular "Californians" - just to the Marxists in charge there.)

Taxing the mileage??????? So the more you drive, the more taxes you pay in addition to the increased gas taxes?

Here's an idea. Every business in California that requires people to commute to get there should simply shut down and move out of that insane state and see how Red Davis figures out to try to tax his way out of bankruptcy as a state.

California - good-bye - unless by some miracle Bill Simon can be elected.

The Costa Mesa-based Automobile Club of Southern California, which has 5 million members, says it is neutral on the bill, and the club is not helping to finance the media campaign.

More disturbing than the Senate's lopsided vote, IMHO.

California's motoring public (as they were once known) needs better representation to fight these loonies in Sacramento than is being offered for the price of an Auto Club membership. The ACSC and its parent, AAA, has completely dropped the ball on this, as well as other issues of importance to the majority of the population who are neither enviro whack jobs nor dependent on public transportation.

Unless somebody gets on the stick and organizes the vast hordes of SUV, pickup and van users into an effective lobbying group those vehicles will be first to be forced off the road. Then, they will start on the rest of us.

We'll all be riding the bus before these enviro fascists are done.

Under a bill approved 22-13 in the Senate on Thursday, the state Air Resources Board would write regulations to take effect in the 2009 model year. The Assembly, which approved an earlier version of the bill in January, plans to take up the final version Monday.

Why so late? Why don't they do it for the 2003 model year? Tell the automakers that they can't sell any SUVs or low-mileage cars in the state? If they want to sell them, they can sell them out of state to non-California residents!

I thought that the California state senators are pro-environment. I guess not. [end_sarcasm]

Don't you hate it when the legislature makes time-bomb laws waiting to explode on the future administrations, and after all the original dunderheads that voted for it are all out of office and retired?

Yep. One of my mini-crusades is to have all new laws & regulations automatically sunset after a few years unless reauthorized by a recorded vote of a sitting leglislature- so you can hold the current officeholders accountable for perpetuating bad laws.
