Sen. Miller Rebuffs Apology to McKinney

Sen. Zell Miller said Rep. Cynthia McKinney's claims that Bush covered up prior knowledge of the Sept. 11 attacks to profit from were "loony" then, and remain so.

In March, McKinney charged the Bush administration with failing to act on warnings that a terrorist attack was coming. She also hinted that the administration wanted to benefit its political allies in the defense industry.

Then, on Thursday, the White House confirmed that President Bush was told a month before Sept. 11 that Osama bin Laden's terrorist network might hijack American airplanes. Lawmakers were left to question whether the government ignored repeated warning signs.

Despite the development, Miller staunchly refused to apologize to McKinney after her supporters walked into his Colony Square office Thursday morning to request he admit he was wrong.

Rev. Markel Hutchins, of the National Youth Connection, hand-delivered the message.

"This could have hurt Cynthia McKinney politically, as well as personally. We think the right thing for Senator Miller to do is to apologize and to say he's sorry," Hutchins said.

Miller responded by issuing a formal statement saying," First, there is no evidence the White House knew of or could have stopped the specific attack of September 11."

"I said back in January in a speech to the Georgia Chamber of Commerce that the American people should have a full and complete accounting of the circumstances surrounding the attacks and the extent of the country's preparedness for, and response to, the attacks," Miller said.

"I am a co-sponsor of a bill in the Senate that would do just that. This hill, which is also co-sponsored by Senators Max Cleland, D-Ga. and John McCain, R-Az., Joe Lieberman, R-Ct. and others, would set up a blue-ribbon panel with a top staff and far-reaching powers. We did this after Pearl Harbor and the assassination of President Kennedy. We should do it now," he said.

Miller finished saying, "I have no intention of apologizing to Rep. Cynthia McKinney for my reaction last month to her comments about the Bush Administration. McKinney charged that the Bush administration deliberately covered up advance knowledge of the attacks in order to profit from the. It was a loony statement last month and it is still a loony statement today."

Former Atlanta mayor Bill Campbell spoke up for McKinney Thursday, saying her peers tried to trivialize her and what she had to say.

"They attempted not only to minimalize her, but also make her seem as though she was a nut, and not only is she a very bright and capable congresswoman, but it seems as though her information was fairly accurate," he said.

Later in the day, McKinney released a statement claiming the Bush Administration "engaged in a conspiracy of silence" regarding prior knowledge of the Sept. 11 attacks.

This is getting stranger and stranger. I think it may be her last stand (one can only hope!). And please don't forget the poll on the WXIA site (http://www.11alive.com/)!

McKinney is a true Democrat. Zell Miller should realize he has nothing in common with her and join the GOP.

Do you have the research and/or contacts inside the Beltway to determine if she, herself had ever been briefed on the Al Quaeda / bin Ladin threat?

If you can uncover that, it would be a HOT BLOCKBUSTER -- since we will ask why SHE did not warn America about the impending threat.

And it would serve as 'check' and 'mate' to Ms. McKinney.

"Stranger" is a kind description. I would say "dirty" or "reckless" or "desperate". McKinney is a lunatic. Miller is right. I don't think the public is buying the politics on this "issue" from the Dems and the media.

...engaged in a conspiracy of silence...

Strange? I always seem to her that phrase with tin-foil nut cases.

UFOs? Conspiracy of Silence.
Cattle mutilations? Conspiracy of Silence.
W knew about THE 9/11 attack and did nothing? Conspiracy of Silence.

Yep. It fits the motif.

It's fair to say they're both Democrats; but of the New Age and the Old School, respectively.

To a dullard and crook like Campbell even McKinney seems like a diamond in a goats ass.

I remember when SHE was part of a "conspiracy of silence "about Bill Clinton. That wasn't that long ago, I won't forget it by election day.

Talk about damning with faint praise! She may be a nut, but she's our nut, and she's nutty only sometimes.

President, Moran Are Urged to Shun Gifts
Muslim Donors Target of Raids
By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, March 28, 2002; Page B05

"The issue emerged when federal agents served warrants on March 20 and 21 at the Herndon-based Saar Foundation, Safa Trust and International Institute of Islamic Thought and 13 other locations. The groups are part of a complex Saudi-based financial empire that U.S. investigators say has handled $1.7 billion since the mid-1990s, sending some of it to groups that authorities have linked to terrorists."

"M. Yaqub Mirza, president of the Saar Foundation and vice president of the Safa Trust; Taha J. Alalwani, a founder of the International Institute of Islamic Thought; Jamal M. Barzinji, a president of the trust and institute secretary; and Hisham Altalib, treasurer for the trust and institute vice president, gave a total of $1,800 to Moran on Jan. 5, 2001."

"It's Norquist's alliance with Alamoudi, however, that's raising eyebrows now. In recent days, some in the press, most notably Salon's Jake Tapper (on September 26), have raised questions about certain Muslim American advocacy organizations (including the American Muslim Council), charging that they have been " tacitly ... supportive of extremist groups guilty of terrorism. " Take Alamoudi, who attended an anti-Israel protest outside the White House on October 28, 2000. Alamoudi revved up the crowd, saying: " I have been labeled by the media in New York as being a supporter of Hamas. Anybody supporters of Hamas here? " The crowd cheered. " Hear that, Bill Clinton? We are all supporters of Hamas ... I wish they added that I am also a supporter of Hezbollah. " (Both groups are on the State Department's official list ofterrorist organizations.)"

What the federal raids in Northern Virginia uncovered.
by Stephen Schwartz

"A major personality on the ground in Virginia is an individual named Jamal Barzinji, whose office in Herndon was a major target of the raids. In 1980, he was listed in local public records as a representative of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), an arm of the Saudi regime with offices in Virginia. WAMY has been deeply involved in providing cover for Wahhabi terrorism. The 2002 entry in the U.S. Business Directory lists the president of the WAMY office in Annandale, Va., as Abdula bin Laden--the terrorist's younger brother."

The spirit of Pearl, fragile and fading

"We advise them not to talk or to speak to the FBI, except with the presence of a legal counsel, and also to remind them that they have the full right not to speak to the FBI if they elect to do so," Yaser Bushnaq, president of Solidarity US, told reporters. Mr. Bushnaq is perfectly correct, and it's no less important to protect the rights of Muslims than the rights of Baptists and Presbyterians (and atheists), but he must not be surprised if Baptists, Presbyterians, atheists and others draw their own conclusions about those who cooperate reluctantly, if they cooperate at all.

["The keystone of the Saudi-sponsored Northern Virginia network is the Saar Foundation, created by Suleiman Abdul Al-Aziz al-Rajhi, a scion of one of the richest Saudi families. The Saar Foundation is connected to Al-Taqwa, a shell company formerly based in Switzerland, where its leading figures included a notorious neo-Nazi and Islamist, Ahmed Huber. Subsequently moved to the United States, Al-Taqwa was shut down after September 11 and its assets frozen by U.S. presidential order. But operations continued, as the Wahhabi lobby shifted to its backup institutions here. .... Men like al-Rajhi, Mahfouz, and al-Qadi are the big players in the financing of Islamic extremism. And their paths repeatedly lead back to Northern Virginia. They don't play for small stakes: Saar received $1.7 billion in donations in 1998, although this was left out of the foundation's tax filings until 2000. No explanation has been offered for this bit of accounting sorcery." Weekly Standard, Wahhabis in the Old Dominion, 04/08/2002, Volume 007, Issue 29]
