This is an email I received about an event planned for Saturday, May18 at the University of California, Santa Cruz campus.
Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 00:28:09 -0700
From: Leslieann Hobayan
Subject: [Grads] Flag This! PART 2 - May 18th
**Please distribute widely**
Creative Combatants:
Re-Imagining the Flag after 9.11
(Installation 2)
What does the flag represent? What do its parts actually entail? Since the events of September 11th, the flag has taken on a pervasive presence flapping from cars, stretched across t-shirts and swimsuits, taped to store front windows making claims like We Will Never Forget or United We Stand. What does the flag really mean now?
To coincide with Resurrecting Dissent, we invite you to express your dissent! and join us in the second communal art installation of re-creating, stitching, sewing a modified US flag a flag that will give voice to erased ugly histories about how this nation was built. We imagine an ugly flag to reflect ugly histories. We want to re-inscribe on the flag the body of the nation what is forgotten. So bring your markers, your sewing needles and help us shake things up. Rabble rousers unite!
THIS Saturday, May 18th
Noon 2pm
Location: TBD
If youre interested in participating and for more info, email:

I hope you can get a few FReepers together and go. It would be great to hear about your experience.
To: redhead
That would be my suggestion, redhead! Thanks for making it!

He chose confederate flag (stars & bars); she chose one of those pretty rainbow striped flags (not knowing it's meaning). That actually happened to my mother! She thought it was pretty. Once she discovered its' alternative meaning, it was quickly replaced.

Here is the location of the "event". Not holding on campus for some reason.

If only I was 1,800 miles closer, I'd drive another 200 to be there.

The installation will take place at the clock tower...I know where I'd like to "install" their flagpoles...

That one needs desecratin' there's another one that the radical homosexual activists use that's a sick parody of Old Glory, rainbow stripes and in the corner, a pink triangle on a lavender field.

Do you have any follow-up information on this event?

Here's what happened:
The Chancellor kicked the group off campus. They were forced to move their demonstration to town. They also ended up making their own flag instead of desecrating an American flag. I would say thats a WIN!
The student group, Students for a Conservative America, was there and took pictures. They will post an article in their online newspaper,
Redwood Review .
As soon as they get the story up, I will post a link.
Also, we got some terrific coverage on a local radio station, KSCO Santa Cruz. They helped get the information out to the community so that we could counter the desecration party.
Thanks to everyone who wrote Chancellor Greenwood and kicked up a fuss with that awful group of people.
To: hedgetrimmer
Thanks for the follow-up report. Please ping me to the story in the student paper once it's posted.
