PAPER: Rock Creek Park Predator Interviewed by Police Investigating Levy Death Thu May 23 2002 12:52:01 ET

D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officials investigating the death of Washington intern Chandra Levy have interviewed a man serving a 10-year prison sentence for attacking two women in Rock Creek Park last year, ROLL CALL DAILY is planning to report on Thursday.

MORE

D.C. Metro Police investigators have "talked to" Ingmar Guandeque, who was arrested in July 2001 after attacking two females (one in May and one in July) who were jogging along the Broad Branch trail in Rock Creek Park. Levy's decomposed body was found Wednesday along the Broad Branch trail in a heavily wooded area.

A second official close to the Levy investigation said that while Guandeque was interviewed after Levy's disappearance last year, investigators are now taking a closer look at him since the intern's body was discovered.

"Clearly there are some coincidences and links -- just because of the proximity of where he [committed his crimes]," said a source close to the investigation.

ROLL CALL's Amy Keller reports: Guandeque, who lived on the 1400 block of Somerset Place Northwest, was arrested last summer and sentenced in February 2002 to two concurrent terms of 10 years' imprisonment for a pair of assaults of female joggers in the Broad Branch section of the park.

The first attack occurred in mid-May 2001, at 6:30 p.m., about two weeks after Levy disappeared. In that case, Guandeque came upon an unnamed female jogger, attacking her from behind while brandishing a knife.

That April 30 was a nice spring day. But May 1 was a gorgeous, incredible, life-enhancing day that drew all DC out to revel, if not chained to a desk.

But why the Klingle Mansion? It is not very interesting to look at, and the inside is used for storage and park offices, only occasionally is it open to the public for events, and it was locked and closed the entirely of Tuesday May 1.

I would hope they would know the difference between a knapsack and a fanny pack.

Seems like they couldn't tell their fanny from a hole in the knap......or something like that........

Here is a non PDF file of the park and park routes and trails?

Remember her body was found about 100 yards into the park from the residential road intersection of Grant Rd and Broad Branch Road. Her remains were closer to the residential area than the actual trail inside the park on a slope. From seeing the pictures of this slope from the internet and TV, it was not a very steep slope (it looks like it could be climbed easily without having to lean over and use your hands to climb it) and the area that was lighted up after dark could be easily seen by reporters and was picked up by the TV cameras last night. This tells me her remains or at least some of them were very close to road outside the park and not far into the park area.

The location seems to be strange as the body could have been brought back to the park and dumped if she was killed due to Condit or the attacker that is now in jail could have picked this spot as he would have an easy escape to get out of the park. Either way the spot where the remains were found could be accessed from inside the park and also from outside the park.

Okay, we do need to work on that hand-out thing.

I have a cartoon on my fridge that has a dog holding a gun on his owners while they are eating...he tells them "Ok, Bucko, I am through begging!", LOL!

My understanding is that they were all small women. You ever heard of crime scene A, Crime scene B? If he want's to sexually assault live women, he's not going to kill them right away. In fact, most of the "fun" is the part where they are overpowered and scared. You know, the part where you gain compliance by holding a knife to someones chin and keep them from screaming by covering their mouth. It's AFTER you subdue and rape them that you shut them up for good.

He had gained control,he thought, relaxed for a moment, and the both savvy and lucky woman managed to get away. He didn't rape her and then leave her unharmed. She escaped, big BIG difference.

There is no question in my mind that the last victim was going to be killed when he was done, unless she got away from him.

Even Ted Bundy, quite practiced and skilled and luring, sexutally torturing and then murdering women, got scared away and had victims get away . This very young man - still on the rapist/murderer learning curve.

Un problemo: neither one of them were found in May.

I nominate you to be in charge of ALL things Geragos for the duration we are "sequestered" for this trial. :-)

I never take my wallet when jogging. This is starting to all make sense now.

Thanks for the reminder on the watch, Howlin. Condit was just trying to keep his personal sleazeball life a secret from everyone.

OR... she was at the computer for about 4 hours. Sweat pants are comfortable. She logs off, gets the call she has been waiting for, is told he'll meet her but he doesn't have much time, so she has to hurry. A car will be sent in 10 minutes to pick her up, or that he'll be there to pick her up at the curb. Be ready at the curb. (just a possibility)

...Her outfit of sweatpants, T-shirt, sneakers, jogging bra, and walkman could be a red herring...

That Anne Marie Smith gal said that condidit was big on disguises.

Perhaps Chandra Levy wasn't running at all, and only wanted to appear as a runner. How much would Chandra stand out if she dressed like a runner and was on a running trail where runners are a dime a dozen?

Perhaps a change of clothes was in the backpack for her flight home, and the sweat pants and sports bra were 'throwaways'.

I say Condit asked her to meet him there after his White House meeting, but on the way to his apartment to appease the little woman.

Does that work? Got a map of all those places?

I'm not sure her walkman necessarily reveals anything about the purpose of her trip, nor does her outfit.

More telling is that her walkman wasn't taken, suggesting a targeted murder, a serial attacker doing so for thrills, or her stumbling onto a situation(such as a drug deal) that gave someone a reason to risk killing her(perhaps even unintentional, as in a hasty reaction).

Question to all: Why were her remains found over a large area? Results of animals, erosion, or purposeful dismembering?

The fact that she looked up the Klingle mansion doesn't "unquestionably" mean that was her destination. It's possible she was going to jog by and was interested in info about the place. It is possible she was heading there, but there are other possibilities as well.

Not to Cartesian certitude, but in the real world, it's a 99.9% chance she didn't look it up because she was just going to jog by it. If you can't comprehend this obvious observation, it's a waste of time to try to explain it to you. Suffice it to say that if you were to ask three days ago, "If they find Chandra, what circumstances would make it most likely Condit had her offed," it would be finding her dead with a worn-out makeshift grave near Klingle Mansion.

Look, you're just someone who isn't going to draw obvious inferences. That's your prerogative. Condit should be lucky enough to get you on his jury.

Because she did get a ride to the park -- but not in a cab.

That's my thinking. The question is, who? Condit? His people?
