WASHINGTON -- Occasional grumbling by some prominent conservatives about President Bush sometimes overshadows his extremely solid support among stalwart Republicans and conservatives around the country.

Many Republicans and Democrats seem to agree that support by itself does not tilt the 2002 elections toward the GOP. Some, however, say it could offset the gains the party out of the White House -- Democrats, in this case -- historically has made in midterm elections.

Uhhh it seems the burning of bridges is the other way around. You really need to come to the realization that there WILL be only TWO viable political parties. The GOP and the Democrats. You can pout and leave the GOP but that will change nothing. If the GOP is left without the conservative anchor then it will just become the "moderate" party and the dems the liberal party . Then Conservatives are left with nothing but irrelevance.

You are correct! The federal government's size, power, and reach are expanding faster under Bush than they did under Clinton. There's a good reason for this phenomenon. When The Democrats are in power and try to grow the government, the Republicans at least give lip service to its opposition. When the Republicans are in power and move to grow the government, there is NO opposition! The Democrats, big media, and Republicans are all in accord, as long as the federal government is expanding. As such, it may be more hazardous to freedom and to the Constitutional Republic to have Republicans in power.

You know, you would be well-advised to not brag to me about how you taught Republicans a lesson in 1992. President George Herbert Walker Bush wasn't the most conservative of Republicans, but people like you threw him out and in his place put the most corrupt, ineffective, traitorous person ever to occupy the Oval Office.

Don't brag to me about teaching a lesson...the lesson I have learned is that to prove a point you will throw out an honorable man who loved his country and replace him with someone who darn near destroyed it, and who is directly responsible for the war we are in now.

It isn't that most of the general public cared about it one way or the other; it is the MEDIA that they are afraid of. That is a hard nut to crack. The thing is, I think he realizes he can only make so many stands and the big one, war with Iraq, is comming. The dems are going to be dragged kicking and screaming to vote on that, and he needs all his capital for that battle.

If the media is a hard nut to crack on a matter on which the public is indifferent...

How much harder will it be for Democrats who are foolish enough to oppose the war in Iraq, in the face of the full force and fury of American vengeance?

No way the media lobbies against that war, they know who spreads the butter on their ratings bread.

I think if Bush had vetoed CFR and made a strong public case about why he did so, he'd have beaten override (did it even pass with 67 votes?). And that's as good as a win, so that makes him more difficult to oppose on a war in Iraq, not less.
