I don't think either side knows the power of the Nukes!

How likely is it that India will target Western Pakistan? You know, where Usama's hiding?
To: Keith in Iowa
I believe that it is unlikely that either side will go to war given how bad they will suffer in an exchange. This will end up like the Cuban crisis.

Ernest, while having these two foolish nation whack each other with nukes would certainly not be a good or desirable thing, I have run across some info to put it in perspective... here:
To: Francis
Of the 2,044 nuclear weapons tests worldwide, there have been 711 in the atmosphere or underwater: 215 by the U.S., 207 by the Soviet Union, 21 by Britain, 45 by France and, 23 by China.
The last atmospheric nuclear weapons test occurred on 16 October 1980 in China. The first was on 16 July 1945 in the U.S.
It is estimated that the total yield of all the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted is 438 megatons. That's equivalent to 29,200 Hiroshima size bombs. In the 36 years between 1945 and 1980 when atmospheric testing was being conducted this would have been equivalent to exploding a Hiroshima size bomb in the atmosphere every 11 hours.
Stay Safe !

Here is a fallout map from a 1950's Chinese 300 kiloton test:
And finally, the ever-popular self-help links:
Nuclear, Biological, & Chemical Warfare- Survival Skills, Pt. II
Honestly, if these idjits nuke each other it will certainly cause regional problems, and we'll catch some fallout ( the further west & east you live, the more you'll get ) and I'd make plans to stay indoors as much as possible until the dust literally settles, and maybe avoid dairy products after those potentially contaminated get into the food chain- but I wouldn't start digging a hole to hide in. Not yet, anyway!
And yes, this is a direct result of Little Big Fraud®'s foolish & nonexistent foreign/nuclear policy for 8 sorry years... I hope all those dam'd Soccer Moms are happy now with helping the cheat & liar stay in office!

This will end up like the Cuban crisis. The problem is that the Pakistani military has no meaningful command-and-control structure. Sure, Musharraf may have no intention of using nukes, but there are plenty of mid-level generals out there on the front lines, any one of which might decide to take matters into his own hands.

I keep hearing people say that there is little command and control in the Pakistani Millitary, but where are people getting that information?

Yes, so I have heard- but they are "the last centurys' hot demographic group which the media worshipped..."
I understand Joe Lunch Pail is the new one.

I keep hearing people say that there is little command and control in the Pakistani Millitary, but where are people getting that information?I think it's just become one of those "known things." Various news organizations have talked about it since Bush started courting Musharraf for help with the Afghan attacks way back when.

Don't you think that the fact that Pakistan might be quick to use Nuke's will prevent India from attacking in the first place?
To: FightThePower!
No.. that would be too logical.

The Arab governments might be nuts, but I don't think the Indian government is.

That's not what they're saying over on d*ckheads unlimited. They have about eighty ways listed that the entire India-Pakistan conflict (all the way back in history, I guess) is entirely the fault of one election-stealing GW Bush. Of course, in their tiny minds, if they have a bad haircut or a flat tire, it was GW Bush in person who did it.

This is a country that by its own admission does not control a lot of its own territory and cannot control "militants" using its soil as a base. It is logical to believe that they do not have C&C procedures in place as effective as, say the US or the UK.
