SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Air Force has suspended a colonel who wrote a letter in which he ridiculed President Bush for his response to terrorism, accusing him of allowing the Sept. 11 attacks to happen because "his presidency was going nowhere." The letter from Lt. Col. Steve Butler was published May 26 in The (Monterey County) Herald.
"He did nothing to warn the American people because he needed this war on terrorism," Butler wrote. "His daddy had Saddam and he needed Osama. His presidency was going nowhere. ... This guy is a joke."
Butler, who called Bush's alleged silence "sleazy and contemptible," had been vice chancellor for student affairs at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. He was suspended May 29 pending an investigation, Air Force spokeswoman Valerie Burkes said Tuesday.

hi techcor
I don't know what it is that makes me want to debate some issues on FR and keep my mouth shut on others
I kept my mouth shut on this one till I read Tuor's post
I appreciate it cause I thought I was alone in thinking this way
I personally have always thought international gangsters were behind it (and got Arab fanatics to carry it out for them)
(but that is just intuition)

my friend Rusty (from Texas) was trained in Russian in this school when he was in army during Vietnam War
year I moved to Tucson ('91) he went on trip to Russia with his wife
on way from airport he saw sign in Russian, and was so excited he could read it
(it said ''flat tires fixed here'')

As for the Hank Williams song, he was pretty darned accurate I would say.LOLMaybe you should post some pictures so we're all exactly sure what you mean.....

ironically enough, those who serve in the military are denied the very rights they serve to protect. in this case, the man in question is being punished for using his first amendment right to free speech.

Go read Article 88 of the UCMJ. You can download it in PDF from the DoD publications website.

Okely, dokely , I guess. But your post just didn't seem like you (you almost always end in "love, palo"). But it seems that even if it was just a group we (America) has declared war on just a group (reference the Barbary Pirates). Take care.

I apologize for my sarcastic tone in my reply to your sincere comment.
You are of course correct that the Free Republic is supposed to be a place for the Watchers of the government to sound the alert on abuses, no matter which flavor they are (Republicrats or Demopubs).
I wrestle with this question from time to time. My usual short answer to myself is that if Dubya wasn't elected, we would still be watching "Janet Reno's Dance Party" at the Department of "Justice".
Are the Pubbies chilled horse pee, rather than the warmed-in-the-sun horse pee that is the Democrats? ;-)

Arne posted,
What is the Defense Language Institute??? Why would airmen need that? If an AF pilot or crewman is talking to foreign nationals, his mastery of their language is the LEAST of his problems. Arne if we told you its real mission, we would have to shoot you!

Gee, I didn't know they even had signals intelligence back then. ;-> Its a good thing that you aren't close to me. I would roll my walker over to you and run its wheel over your foot!

Actually in the old days, the same scores enabled you go to nuclear school/subs, NSG or the Naval Academy.

Hi techcor
There's so much I don't understand 'bout 9/11
I am friends with a FReeper here who has a family member high up in Bush administration
The day 9/11 happened, she freeped me what a serious attempt had been made on the lives of both Bush and Cheney and said she would freep me later with details (but not to tell anyone)
I knew it was unwise, a freep can be read by others
She musta come to same conclusion, and decided against it
As a result I joined one thread about who leaked flight plan for Air Force One
I figured first they tried to to deprive us of Bush by fixing the election
Then they tried to overturn legal election
Now this was 3rd attempt to deprive us of Bush
(I noticed he wore bulletproof vest after that)
If Gore had won, he would have been puppet for clinton to stay in power
and gangster control of our government would be complete
I guess that's why I always thought international gangsters were behind 9/11

As a former navy nuke (subs, mechanical operator/ELT), I agree that we were the smartest, hardest working, most dedicated, best looking, patriotic, and "drink to excess" sailors that the navy had and still has. I wouldn't say that we had the highest intellects. Some of us could really get into the gutter when we had to.

Hmmmm. Interesting take on the situation. So are you still so ticked at Bush that you'll vote libertarian? I'm annoyed at some of the decisions but so far he's much better than the Gore-puppet-of-Clinton choice. Take care (P.S. If you don't have time to write back , it's ok, I don't get offended that easily and eventually one of us has to not write back.)

He should be tried in military court for treason.
To: MSSC6644
He is in the military. This man acted in insubordination to a commander in chief in a time of war. There is no free speech issue here whatsoever.

I personally don't think this policy should be in effect unless there is an active military action going on around the world. In times of peace, the military should be allowed to say what they want. But, in times like now, they should be court-marshaled.

hi techcor
It's only last month or 2 I've been reading libertarian threads on FR and becoming exposed to their thinking
I like it, their vision of freedom resonates for me
They don't seem to think we can succeed in getting a libertarian elected President
but I say why not?
but as for my ideas, take them and a dollar and buy a cup of coffee
Tuor's post bout the rage and fear is profound
the next ten years may rock 'n' roll
If I can keep peace in my heart, and my idealism high
it's prolly the best thing I can do
