It's Official: LAT/WP vs Free Republic Settles
LAT/WP vs Free Republic ^ | June 19, 2002 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 06/19/2002 1:54:11 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

I just received official word that our settlement with the LAT/WP in their alleged copyright infringement and unfair competion suit against Free Republic (click Source link above for complete history of the case) is completely finalized with the court. I do not have a copy of the final order yet, but the basic terms are as follows:

I will post the entire final order including the list of related publications as soon as I receive a copy and get it scanned in.

Well, my fingers are not cold and dead and my keyboard has not been ripped away. While this is not entirely a win for FR, neither is it a crushing defeat. Free Republic is alive and well and the fight against liberalism continues on. It's a crying shame that the hallowed words of the WP/LAT will no longer grace our pages, but, somehow, I am sure we will manage to live on without them.

And despite what our detractors may say, we have not committed any crimes or broken any laws and we have not admitted to any guilt. We have negotiated a mutual agreement and settlement with the LAT/WP and have agreed upon satisfactory terms for continuing forward without having to spend the rest of our lives in court.

Many thanks to all of you for your past and continuing support.

Regards.

Jim Robinson

If you had the funds, I'm sure that you would have prevailed in the courts. - The settlement proves that they thought so too, but it is good to have this thorn removed.

Go Jim!

Congratulations, Jim. The Slimes-ComPost, DNC and their associated law firms have been denied in their egregious attempt to shut down an effective voice of conservatism.

That, in itself, is a victory for freedom.

Thanks for fighting the battle.

This is great news, Jim. Thanks from all of us for standing tall in the face of the beast who would destroy FR.

Outstanding, Jim -- congratulations.
When the hell are you guys in CA going to bounce those socialists off the bench in the 9th Circuit? I think too many of them were taught under bilingual education and thereby fail to understand straight English.

Wash Post has been carrying the AP articles linked from Drudge but I found the Las Vegas Sun also carries them. I would recommend anyone reserching for an AP article, go visit the Las Vegas Sun and get their link from there.

Thanks for this tip!

Jim, you mention in your post: "Unless we receive prior written permission on an article by article basis, Free Republic agrees to continue posting only excerpts (as allowed by fair use) and links from any of the LAT/WP or related publications."

Do we know what the other related publications may be so we can steer clear of posting entire articles?

Thanks and thank you for fighting the good fight...

Great news Jim.

Maybe this will put to rest the many snipes, doomsayers and critics who wanted to use this issue against you and FR ... but having seen their moodus operenda for some years now ... unfortunately many of them will just find something else to harp on.

Best to just ignore it and keep fighting the good fight.

Again, glad this is behind you and FR.

FRegards.

Congratulations Jim! I'm sure the end of this matter is welcomed, and will allow FreeRepublic to return 100% of its efforts to the original, stated cause of the forum: to root out corruption.

I do remain however, somewhat saddened at the much higher cost that has been paid over the last few years to get to where we are today. I speak of the friendships that have been strained, and ultimately lost. Some really good people who I grew to know and respect have come and gone. I sure do miss Connie and Brian, to name but two. I realize I'll subsequently be trashed by others for mentioning their names, but they were a big part of some of FR's successes. Who could ever forget the Rally for Justice, and Brian's incredible writings on the forum?

I shall always treasure Connie introducing me to Alan Keyes when he spoke at the City Club of Chicago. She personally saw to it I got in, as the security personnel already had my name when I arrived. And Brian's freepmails to me were always an encouragement. I still have them in my freepmail and refer to them when some of FR's "detractors" get me down.

How I sometimes just long for the good ol' days. :-)

Talk about a tempest in a teacup.

Looks to me like FR took a dead-center hit with a Nerf® arrow.

Well, on with the show.
