BALTIMORE -- As Morgan State University President Earl S. Richardson surveyed the sea of newly minted graduates at the school's 126th commencement last month, his joy was tempered by a question that has grown too conspicuous to ignore: Where are all the men?

Not only were the head of student government, the senior class president and 96 of Morgan's 141 honorstudents women, but so were two-thirds of the university's 860 graduates.

my comment: It is not surprising that there are more women graduating than men these days. From the earliest of ages boys are being told their behavior is not acceptable, are being put on ritalin at a far more disproportionate number than girls, are castigated for the supposed sins of their fathers and are being herded like sheep towards some sort of efiminate socialist ideology.

Most of the under-25's I talk to see college as a scam, have no intention of working for someone else all their lives, and are working at their own businesses. Very different than the 70's, my decade, when we still believed that myth of college = a secure future.

The PC crap was really starting to "break" when I was in school. I don't think that I could take it. I would probably get expelled for (rightly) calling someone an idiot.

...you know, their feelings would probably be hurt (boo hoo)...

If it is WHITE men that are meant, there are either no returns, or negative returns, to funds spent on educating them beyond high school.

In the teeth of affirmative action, careers requiring a college education are effectively closed to white males, except for children of the very political elite.

Why, then, would they bother to attend and study, and why would their parents waste the money, to send them there. Only to be castigated and scorned by liberal, Marxist, and lesbian professors who would blame them for all the evil in the world, and give them failing grades-- if they WERE so unwise as to try to attend.

The miracle is that ANY go, but my info is those wm's who still attend college are gays who want to join the whining competition that has replaced college education.

"What does it mean in the long run that we have females who are significantly more literate, significantly more educated than their male counterparts?"

Yeah, like going to college makes one significantly more literate and educated. What a load of dogwaste.

If it is WHITE men that are meant....

I don't think they mean white males, since the stats for other males are even worse. The article continues...

The gender gap is even greater among Hispanics -- only 40 percent of that ethnic group's college graduates are male -- and African Americans, who are now seeing two women earn bachelor's degrees for every man.

What were we saying when 57% of college grads were men?

I've seen too many college grads working at minimum wage jobs. It's because most colleges, don't bother teaching anything anymore that could actually prepare one for the work world. Too busy paying commies to spout off anti american ideas and cloaking it under the guise of "freedom of speech". I'd be willing to bet there are far more female liberals out there than male. The men have learned that college isn't teaching them anything they can use, the women just simper about how great their education is.

Kind of makes me wish I was a 19-year old college student again.

Speaking as a 42 year old college student, I can make a couple of comments.

First: When my wife's kids were in high school and even before I saw that they were constantly discouraged from being boys. They learned to despise school early. They didn't go on to colege which they saw as being just more punishment.

I recently received an AAS degree and the school I was at was 60% female, but the rate of enrollment in certain types of majors was not that way.

Women took Sociology, Counseling, Social Work and Liberal Arts.

Men took Criminal Justice, Business and Computer Science.

Yeah, there are lots more women graduating, but the men are still going to be running the world twenty years down the line, and the NAG gang will STILL be screaming discrimination.

Yeah that's what I was thinking...

College for me was interesting, I guess, but I'd a had a heck of alot more useful education if I'd gone to mechanic school or something...

in the long run that we have females who are significantly more literate, significantly more educated than their male counterparts? It is likely to create a lot of social problems

It didn't create social problems when men were more educated, why would it now?

I'm confused...why are they wondering?

Simple. It flies in the face of what their leftist philosophy tells them to expect. Remember - these are real leftists. They actually believe the PC garbage. Let's review a couple of their premises:

1. Men oppress women on a vast systematic basis. Women may have begun breaking through, but there is a long way to go yet.
2. Affirmative action is necessary simply to gain gender balance. Without it, men would vastly outnumber women in all powerful institutions.

This makes the result puzzling to them, because it puts the lie to these premises. Of course, being leftists, they have a deeper need to FEEL right than to be honest. So this will make them scratch their heads for a while, but they'll still carry on exactly as before.

I don't think they meant white males either, Morgan State is one of Baltimore's traditionally black campuses. If the prez of the college saw more than 4 white males graduating I'd be surprised.

I've seen too many college grads working at minimum wage jobs.

I'm sure you'll be able to cite other examples, but how many of those college grads you've seen have had degrees that by themselves, are worth little more than minimum wage? I'm talking about degrees primarily in the liberal arts--French Art History, womens' studies, drama, dance, fine arts, psychology, sociology, etc. Some of these fields might pay off more with a Ph.D., but who has the time or the money to make that kind of investment?

Bottom line is, college is an investment, in both yourself and the economy. If you make a wise investment, you won't have to work minimum-wage jobs to get by, and the job market gets employees who can contribute sought-after skills. It's high time that we squash the idea that all degrees are guarantees of a secure, and highly-paid future.
