Some friends and I have what we call "hecklefest" occasionally, no set intervals of time. We just basically get together cook burgers, etc., and purposefully watch bad movies just to put them down - to the extreme. It's great fun.
Anyway, we got a movie off the B rack somewhere that was called "G.I. Bro". Absolutely the worst serious attempt at a war movie I've ever seen. The main features of the movie were the ability to run down the sides of railroad tracks, and falling down in slow motion. It was really awful.

People have a difficult time looking at The Patriot objectively around here because Mel Gibson is known not to be a Hollywood leftist, and because the movie depicted kids shooting guns in a positive light.

I didn't like "The Patriot" at all. It just didn't work as a movie; too outlandish and contrived.

The German tanks were not painted over Shermans, they were painted over M-47 Pattons, I believe. The American tanks were M-41 Bulldogs. This was a common movie practice in the 60's and 70's. They're aren't too many real Tigers running around you know! The movie Patton used the Spanish army and had M-48 Pattons for the Germans and M-41's for our stuff.

"U-571" was derivative, historically untrue, and boring.

I wasn't too bad on this until they had the homing torpedoes. Hey it looked great in "Hunt for Red October", but.........the technology didn't exist. Movie makers always go wrong when they play the audience for suckers.

As a departure, when I saw "Gladiator" I thought the motivation of the one officer who refused his sword to Commodus at the end to be very odd; not supported by what had gone before. I now have the deluxe DVD set and his motivation for basically betraying the emperor was brought forth in a deleted scene. So movie makers have to cross a lot of "T"s and dot a lot of "i"s t make things work.

Yea, but Donald Sutherland's turn as the "General" inspecting the troops is priceless and funny stuff.

Agreed. Starship Troopers redefined bad. Cheesy plot, gratuitous violence and T&A, really bad acting, no stars. Except for "Bridges of Madison County", it was the worst movie that I've paid money to see.

Notice in Black Hawk Down that they never mention Clinton getting them into that mess but they give him credit for pulling them out at the end

Most of the films that have been nominated- The Longest day, A Bridge Too Far, Thin Red Line- aren't really all that bad. Though I haven't seen it, I understand Oh, Inchon! is a REAL turkey. Set in the the famous landing in Korea, the movie was financed by Sun Young Moon and stars Lawrence Olivier as MacArthur. Richard Roundtree plays a US soldier killed midway in the movie, who somehow returns later in the film with no explanation!

You should do some research. The US Navy fielded the Mark 27 passive acoustic homing torpedo in 1943; however it was only used by Pacific theatre submarines. The Kriegsmarine also developed them for u-boat use. HERE are pictures of the Mark 27. Cute little thing, no?
