Dirty Dancing With Janet Reno

Trailing Florida Gov. Jeb Bush by a full 22 points in the polls and lagging behind her Democrat primary challenger in the fund-raising race, Janet Reno danced for bucks and, she said, for fun Friday night.

The former U.S. attorney hosted an estimated 2,000 supporters, who coughed up $25 a head to share the dance floor with her at the "Janet Reno Dance Party" at Level, a Miami Beach club, according to Reuters.

"It was fun," Reno told reporters after her star turn jiving somewhat tentatively on a stage in a room full of writhing bodies.

"What was most surprising was when someone said, 'You dance real well,' and I said, 'I didn't know that.'"

But it wasn't just the fund raising that Reno said caused her to give the party, she told reporters while speaking in a dimly lit attic-like space at the top of the nightclub as, Reuters reported, the music throbbed below.

"I want people to understand that politics can be fun, you can reach out to young people, you can come to a place like this, where there are grandmothers, young people, people from all different backgrounds."

Reno is burying her two primary opponents in the polls, although most Democrat professionals in Florida would rather have anybody but Reno heading the ticket and dragging down other party candidates along with her, in a race polls show she has little or no chance of winning.

But Friday night she rocked and rolled as worshipful supporters gathered around to shake her hand or get her autograph.

"We like Janet, Carl, a 34-year-old from Fort Lauderdale who came with three male friends and declined to give his last name, told Reuters. "We're interested in getting rid of Jeb ... and we like her because she cares about issues more than politics."

The last time Janet Reno danced in public was in a "Saturday Night Live" skit in January 2001 in which actor Will Ferrell dressed in drag to show Reno, who is tall and angular in appearance, as the painfully gawky host of a decidedly uncool party, Reuters recalled.

Reno then crashed though a fake wall and danced the twist with Ferrell, both of them dressed in blue dresses with matching jackets and pearls.

Notably absent among her worshipful supporters Friday night were large numbers of Miami's huge Cuban exile community, who recall bitterly how Reno gave the order for federal agents to snatch Elian Gonzalez at gunpoint from his Miami relatives and then shipped him back to Castro's communist dictatorship.

Thank you, Bobby, what I wanted to say is, why is not somebody close to her trying to stop her to make a fool about herself! I feel so sorry about this fading woman, there is at least no dignety anymore. That's sad isn't it? All these people who needed/used her in the Clinton Adm., where are they? Who is protecting her now, not to be a national fool? I think, she is not capeble to realize it by herself. She has PARKINSON'S.........!!!!! Brain damage....!!!!
