He was, of course, one of a few Westerners invited to visit Pyongyang a few years ago, and bow at the graven image of a large statute of Kim Il Sung.

All I need to know about the brutality of the North Korean Communists was what I read
in an article in The Los Angeles Times during the 50th Anniversary observances of
The Korean War.

A man who'd been young recounted how he was captured by the North Korean Communists just
before the war broke out. He was jailed for attempting to evade service in the North Korean
military.

He said that he managed to escape during the chaos of the opening battles, but that
some prisoners had been burned to death or hatchetted to death while still in chains.

I'll never forget the takehome message he gave for his experience:

"The Communists were worse than the Japanese."

Given the little love lost between Koreans and the Japanese, that says a lot.
