[history]
A state police field supervisor who instructed officers how to lawfully conduct drug interdiction stops is facing a $20 million lawsuit for allegedly violating those same standards during a traffic stop two years ago in Hanover County.
At the center of the allegations is a 10-minute Virginia State Police videotape that purportedly shows some of the officer's misdeeds.

About that time, Uvanni said, Blydenburgh told Brown that if he didn't allow a search of his vehicle, the trooper would detain Brown, impound his car and then search it. The common intimidation tactic.

Every now and then.........just every now and then........one runs across some cop or trooper who has seen FAR too many Dirty Harry movies. They are under the impression that that badge and gun make them gods.
I hope this guy wins his lawsuit.

If the trooper is required to switch on his camera for a traffic stop, and didn't do it, that right there is an actionable violation of policy. The trouble with the lawsuit is that even if the guy wins, the taxpayers pay. Where is the personal accountability for the officer?

Well then, the taxpayers will have to wise up.

Where is the personal accountability for the officer? Come on, jokes like that don't sit too well with my breakfast.

Let me guess - this guy sues (as he damn well should) and wins his case, and the WODdies factor in the settlement money as part of "the devastating cost of illegal drug use to our communities".

"Am I under arrest?" "Am I free to go?" "Am I being illegally detained?"

Another officer videotaped the stop.
Things that make you go "hhmmmmmmmm."
Me thinks other officers were tired of this guy too.
To: putupon
Smart thinking for the victim to give a running commentary on the continuing abuses. Makes it impossible for the cop to try to spin or confuse the matter later.

"I think 99.9 percent of the troopers on the road wouldn't do this," he said Innumeracy.
I wonder if he realizes that he just said that about 700 cops would do this.

Me thinks other officers were tired of this guy too.At least one of them was, but the way the tape was handled makes me think that the sentiment is not universal within the department. There's more wrong there than just one bad cop.
