Mo1 gave me the link to the archives, which I finally bookmarked, and now you've made it even easier and posted the Friva link right here! Thank you! You are such a valuable asset to Free Republic and your efforts and hard work are not going unnoticed.

Thank You Agitator!

Hoover Dam is a magnificent dam, IMHO.

Been there, done that.

Parked in the dam parking lot. Took the dam tour. Shopped in the dam gift store. All in all, had a dam good time!

when two freepers meet at an event for the first time. It's a bit reminiscent of the mating dance of certain large birds

birds of a feather flock together?????

RW9, perhaps your wakeup call has been explained!

"My impression is you took Matt's statement out of context."

To be more accurate, Matt's statement was posted "out of context." I made it clear in my second post that my comments were to be strictly taken in that light. The "out of context" quote portrayed Matt as advising a form of media apartheid on the abortion issue. I wish I'd heard the entire lecture - but I didn't - so I began not with flames, but with a pointed question. The answer to that pointed question - not Matt Lewis's statement - spawned the debate, so you are off the mark for your criticism here.

":Therefore, because you were not privey to ALLLLLL he had to say, the statement seemed out of line to you. I heard all the statementS about the subject, and I agree with MATT!!

If you read my posts carefully or completely, you would have realized that I prefaced my own remarks with that very sentiment. Still, the debate launched from RedWing's comments more than the Matt Lewis quote.

Thanks for being an adult about this.

Are you listening right now, too? Carry_Okie is on right now. He's saying that his book is generating interest on the right and even on the left. Even the leftist academics are seeing their environmental policies are not working. This is great!

Slip, I'd really be interested in your observations on the conference, things that stood out to you, interesting people you met, did you stay for the Sunday morning meeting? And if so, what your comments are about that meeting (I couldn't make it so it's killing me to have missed it). I think the wackos have left the building so it's safe again to speak your mind. ; - )

If we shrink from engaging our own, how can we be expected to engage the enemy?

It's not engagement that bothers me ... it's marriage??

FRiva BUMP!
Thanks, you two, for all your efforts!

""Are you saying one should not study or try to understand evil simply because it/they are evil? You don't advocate studying an opponent or enemy so as to be able to at least identify them or at best defeat them in the future?"

If you're gonna post lengthy comments to other people's posts, you should at least read their posts in entirety.

I said: "To emulate Carville and Begala for their enthusiasm is fine. Carefully studying them as opponents is necessary."

The "frightening" thing was that that particular comment got ignored the first time too, evoking a deeper foray into the Nazi references.

Now back to our regularly scheduled discussion on the FRN conference.

This is one of the more inocuous things Matt Lewis said. And my daddy always told me to "dress for success." So daddy was correct.

How Audiences Rate You

Visual = 55%
Vocal = 33%
Words you speak = 7%

This helped me quite a bit. I've always been afraid to speak at FreeRepublic events because I thought I didn't have enough arguments to go around. LOL! This shows me that as long as you stay within your conservative realm, look presentable and have a pleasant speaking voice, you'll be a success!

I surely did like that one.

I'll send more of my little observations later on.

Thanks for this wonderful thread!

I arrived home last night, and, as usual, have had to hit the ground running. I'll be back this evening with my thoughts and maybe even a funny yet sweet oph story.....

How Audiences Rate You

Visual = 55%
Vocal = 33%
Words you speak = 7%

I carefully noted the "commandments" of public speaking as well:

- Frame the debate.
- Know the difference between your immediate audience and your REAL audience, then tailor your message accordingly.
- Smile. Make eye contact.
- Don't say "Um." It is verbal static. People hate listening to static, and will do their best to tune it out.
- Don't point. It makes you look judgemental and severe.
- Target your specific message to your audience.
- Use repetition. Use repetition. Use repetition. Use repetition.

Did I mention "use repetition?"

While lisening to BobJ's talk at the dinner, I actually thought of that very thing, the 7% substance thing, because as Bob talked, I would find myself thinking, "Wow, what a great speech Bob is giving," and then I'd have to hurry to catch up to what he was saying because my admiring thoughts were getting in the way. Thank goodness for the archive which I'm listening to right now. That 7% thing appears to be about right, at least in my case.

Oh my goodness! Chuck Muth is speaking now on the Radio FR archive! It's from his luncheon talk, I wonder if they got his talk during the morning too? I'm so glad Freepers can hear him.

Here's another passage in my notes from Matt:

Developing a Message Which Works

M=EC3

Message equals emotion X contrast X connection X credibility.

Emotion is important in politics. Moral outrage is the No. 1 dynamic in politics.

I think we as conservatives have not used the moral outrage and emotion angle enough in our local campaigns.

It generally helps to know something about what you're talking about and having some factor of common human feeling before running your mouth. Of course, that has never stopped you, has it?

Are you saying that only women should have a say in abortion? That men have no rights as fathers nor any ethical lights as human beings by which to evaluate the morality of such a decision?

You haven't repeated yourself enough, strela! Remember it takes at least seven repeats!

You took great notes!
