Vanity here.
Ran into a major serving with the guard here in Houston. We were in a bookstore- him in BDUs, me in my usual shorts/t-shirt.
We talked a little about service, morale in the army, possibility of war, etc..
I remembered all the hostility I felt towards the officer corps when I was in- "they're just ticket punchers" "They don't really care about us" "They. They. Them. blah blah blah."
He was a very squared away guy-NOT a "perfumed prince" (a la Hackworth.)
Sucked my gut in, snapped off a raggedy-assed salute, said "Airbone, sir"
I dunno. I was glad to see we had STRAC troops like this taking care of business...I was embarassed to be reminded that HE was gutting it out, and I was enjoying a life without PT, deployment, etc.
Airborne "thank you" to the Ossifer types from a Sp4 (ret) grunt.
