The Guardian says they were shot. Maybe they weren't the same people. But the western media has been sugarcoating the bloodletting in Kashmir for a long time, so if the Guardian story refers to the same incident, i most definitely go with the Daily Excelsior. Islamist rebels shot dead eight Muslim villagers, including three women, in Indian Kashmir yesterday as a US envoy took his peace mission to Islamabad to try to cool tensions between India and Pakistan over the disputed region.
The killings occurred during an election campaign for a new assembly in India's Jammu and Kashmir state scheduled for the autumn, which India hopes will boost the legitimacy of its rule.

US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage arrived in Islamabad from New Delhi amid rapidly escalating tensions over Kashmir after Pakistan's claim last week that it had killed dozens of Indian soldiers who had attacked an outpost near Kargil, a claim that India has denied.

'We can offer assistance, we cannot impose a solution,' Armitage told reporters after talking with President Pervez Musharraf.

Armitage said that obvious infiltration by Islamist guerrillas was continuing across the line of control into Indian-held Kashmir, but that Pakistan has assured him it was not responsible.

Armitage arrived in the area on his latest peace mission amid new exchanges between the two sides, and fears that the crisis over Kashmir is once again in danger of boiling over into war.

Armitage acknowledged little had changed in the tense stand-off between the two nuclear-armed nations since he visited the area in June.

That visit eased tensions somewhat as the two nations appeared on the brink of war. 'I can say nothing has changed from the assurances I was given in June,' said Armitage yesterday.

In the violence yesterday, eight Muslim villagers were shot dead by suspected Islamic militants. Indian police said the attackers barged into the homes of villagers in the district of Rajouri, which is close to the border with Pakistan, and fired indiscriminately.

After reports of clashes between Pakistani and Indian troops last week, Pakistan's army spokesman, General Rashid Qureshi, said dozens of Indian soldiers were killed after attacking a military post near Kargil. Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes described the Pakistani allegations as an 'outright lie'.

Pardon the stupid question, but what is it with terrorists and their obsession with beheading their victims? There are thousands of ways to do away with someone. Why decapitation?

Not a stupid question. I had a discussion about this and one of the things we came up with was some medieval notion on part of the jihadis about the soul being seperated if the head was cut off.

Islamic texts do make references to beheading unbelievers and apostates.

In Kashmir, they've also absconded with the head in numerous cases. Maybe stored in some abattoir like mosque along with all the other purloined heads.

Until America recognizes that the Islamic world is full of these murderous fanatics -- we are doomed.

America - alone if she must - must destroy massive numbers of these folks and destroy multiple major targets to convince these bastards to "back off"..

I bet you can't remember the name of the American who was beheaded at the same time the Burnhams were kidnapped in the Phillippines last year.

Numerous beheadings and decapitations have taken place in Kashmir. Young brides on the their wedding night and 14 year schoolboys as well.

NONE have been reported or talked about or any TV outlets. Nor been mentioned in mainstream newspapers in the West.

No, the jihadis do not do it for the attention. The do it because they like it; they get their jollies from it and it gives them a hard-on.

They do beheadings, decapitations and head-nappings because their religion and the religion's leaders exhort them to.
They like it. And they become better muslims and purify themselves further by adhering to the precepts of the koran and the hadith by beheading 'low' muslims and other unbelievers.

No, a hispanic sounding name wasn't it? If these terrorists are choosing decapitation as their method of random terror because that is how they get their jollies, then they wouldn't mind if they are chosen and dispatched [despatched, alt. spelling] in their turn in a cold, quick, and professional manner like destroying rogue coyotes themselves, would they. So many terrorists, so little time, it seems.
