Smith, Sununu Clash on Rewarding Illegal Aliens
Newsmax.com
August 29, 2002

Some people think crime does pay: Rep. John E. Sununu, the New Hampshire Republican hoping to replace Sen. Bob Smith, wants to reward some illegal aliens by granting them amnesty.

Sununu favors the amnesty extension bill that passed the House on March 12 - with the support of President Bush. It would let illegal aliens stay in the U.S. while their applications for permanent legal residence are processed, if they are related to a U.S. citizen or have certain job skills.

Sununu claims the measure is "pro-family” because some of those affected applied to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which as usual is too incompetent to do its job.

"But the Congressional Research Service and a U.S. Department of Justice spokesman confirmed the program does extend amnesty for people who were 'unauthorized' — that is, illegal — aliens as of last April 30," the Union Leader newspaper reported in Manchester, N.H. Smith opposes the extension. He says it doesn't matter whether they entered the country illegally or became illegal after the expiration of legal visas. "If they’re illegal, they’re illegal,” he said. "It’s wrong, and it’s dangerous.”

Smith's campaign "pointed out news reports from a month ago that Hesham Mohammed Hadayet, who had killed three people on July 4 at the El Al airline terminal in Los Angeles, was in the country under the same program," the Union Leader said.

Yet more evidence confirming what principled conservatives have known for a long time--Sununu is no conservative--as evidenced by his cumulative 40% Conservative Index rating by the New American magazine and his B- grade from Gunowners of America. In contrast, Senator Smith has racked up a record as the most conservative member of the US Senate during the past 12 years. Smith has championed the conservative cause almost alone on many occaisions including the pro-life cause, Second Amendment rights, missile defense, nuclear arms control and so many more issues including counterterrorism and border security.

On these same issues, Sununu has either provided no leadership or actually opposed the conservative position such as in the case of his votes to reward illegal immigrants and terrorist murderers alike with amnesty. Another example is his indefensible vote to provide classified information to suspected terrorists putting the sources and methods of US intelligence at risk of being compromised and/or killed. Sununu, who is of Palestinian/Lebonese descent, has also accepted money from pro-Islamicist terrorist groups in the US for supporting their policies. Sununu supports independence from Israel and statehood for the PLO terrorist-led West Bank and Gaza Strip, a policy which if implemented, would merely add to the ranks of terrorist states and Axis of Evil. In short, Sununu is as close as they come in the Republican Party to recently defeated Rep. Cynthia McKinney. He is patently unqualified to be a United States Senator.

Has Sununu ever supported "amnesty" for any native-born American taxpayer stuck with an IRS lien - or even any native-born American taxpayer innocently caught up in one of the IRS's infamous snafus?

Sununu deserves to lose. GOP elites need to be sent a message that the grassroots social conservatives that put them in will no longer support a GOP that doesn't support us.

I disagree with Sunnunu on this issue, but still support him on turncoat Smith who has turned liberal on several other issues and who cannot win the general election.

In just love these "Sununu is a RINO" and "No, Smith is a RINO". Regardless, anyone who stomps all over Shaheen is my favorite.

Mr. Sununu, what laws can I break that you'll amnesty me for?

After 9/11, the LAST thing we should be doing is rewarding illegal aliens. Bob Smith is a Reagan conservative with a track record to prove it. 'Nuf said.

Thanks for the ping-a-long.

If Sununu agrees with Bush that must make him the conservative, right?

There's a larger picture than the GOP to look at. Bob Smith made a mistake, he corrected it, but what's more important to me is conservative principles. Rewarding lawbreakers is not one of them. Terrorists who committed crimes in the US used the 245(i) program to gain legal citizenship. Mr. Sununu hasn't learned from that mistake, just like Spencer Abraham didn't.

Well, that is what his moderate RINO supporters would have us think, but remember Bush endorsed Smith not Sununu even though Sununu provided the single vote that got Bush's proposed amnesty for illegal aliens including suspected terrorists to pass through the House. As the article reports, this program has already gotten at least three people killed by a terrorist who benefited from it. How many more Americans must lose their lives to terrorist beneficiaries of this bill. Mr. Sununu seems to think that the rights of suspected terrorists who break the law and come across the border illegally equals or exceeds the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. I do not share that view and neither does conservative hero, Sen. Robert Smith and that is why I am urging all New Hampshire Republicans to vote for him on September 10th! Check out Newsmax.com for a list of Sen. Smith's accomplishments.

Smith is the logical one to vote for. It is a shame he shot himself in the foot last election cycle.

That's a bunch of crapola and you know it. Smith switched sides on only one issue of concern to conservatives--oil drilling in ANWR. However, Smith supports drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and Sununu opposes it so I find Sununu's criticism of Smith on this issue rather hypocritical to say the least. Care to list any other votes by Senator Smith which are indicative of him "turning liberal"? Obviously not, because he hasn't cast any other "liberal" votes. This is just really a straw argument designed to justify electing a moderate good for nothing 40% conservative who votes liberal 60% of the time RINO like Sununu and I think that it is about time that some of his supporters start fessing up to this fact. Smith is a conservative hero along the lines of Jesse Helms and Ronald Reagan.

Saying he is too liberal and unelectable is patently false in view of the above facts and the fact that he has not lost an election for the last two decades. Smith got re-elected last time even though the liberal media pundits predicted he would lose. This year is no different. The liberals are still saying he's unelectable even though the latest poll shows him leading his Democrap opponent, Shaheen. So much for the electability straw argument...The truth is that if Sununu hadn't waged backstabbing internicene warfare against incumbent GOP Senator Robert Smith he would be leading Shaheen by a lot more than he currently is and would probably have this race "in the bag" by now. What is most troubling about Sununu is that for selfish and personal reasons he chose to sabotage Bush's efforts to win this seat in an election in which Bush badly needs a GOP majority in the Senate to further his agenda.

What ISSUES are you referring to Sen. Smith as being a turncoat ?

cannot win the general

Bull $#!T

THAT Smith left the party for a while is an advantage IMO.
It shows that he has the courage of his convictions.
Unlike Sununu who is a RINO in full regalia.

As for me and my house, we'll be voting for Smith.

It is a shame he shot himself in the foot last election cycle.

I personally really don't see his leaving the G.O.P. as having shot himself in the foot.

I've had serious considerations to that affect of the last two years, and why NOT?

I'm proud of Smith.

Smith left the GOP and denounced it, only to come scuttling back when his presidential campaign went nowhere and he saw the opportunity to become a committee chairmen.

As to changing his views, he has suddenly become a big "environmentalist," and opposes Pres. Bush's proposal to permit drilling in ANWR.
