"MAKKAH, 1 September The Muslim World League (MWL) has urged the Earth Summit committee studying problems of women and family to draw benefit from the rules of ethics and morality as enshrined in Islam.

The comparison is easily lost when you consider that all Bobbit had to do was put his trousers on to put it out of sight.
Her options were considerably more complicated.
I suppose, however, that Islamic men would not agree with me. Women have no options under their "care".

Honor killings are not unheard of in other non-Islamic countries like Brazil, Japan, India, Mexico, and even the USA.Retracting previous statement.
Are you saying that honor killings are a cultural norm in the U. S.?

And the point of this story is? This happens all the time there, and there is nothing we can do about it.

Something to think about on 9/11/02, when all the hijab-wearers come out and crow about how good Islam is for women...

Please, uk_nomad, I agree with a lot of your post, but noting that the U.S. has more animal shelters than shelters for battered women is ridiculous. The reason for this is simply that there are many more abused animals here than there are abused women.
I live in the US and I can tell you that domestic violence here is, in most cases, verbal or psychological (and may be against the man, as well) and in no case is it culturally supported, as it is in Pakistan and other Muslim countries.
Of course it happens in the US; my daughter is a police officer in Denver, and a large percentage of their calls are domestic violence calls. But that usually means shouting and slapping, and not blinding or mutilation. And the police policy is to arrest at least one or both of the parties, simply to keep them away from each other at that given moment. What happens to the case after that depends on the parties involved, but it's certainly not because society in the US lacks the intention or desire to protect women and children (and men, on occasion) from violence.
Muslim - and Hindu - society, on the other hand, seems to find the blinding, mutilating or killing of a wife (or child) perfectly acceptable. Sorry, but they need a bit of reeducation if they wish to join the modern world.

Zahida Parveen had reconstructive surgery in the United States after being badly disfigured by her husband. She received a prosthetic nose and ears and artificial eyes.

In fact, more of my friends have abusive spouses/boyfriends than don't.You must be running with the wrong crowd.
I don't think we're in much of a position to wag our fingers while the majority of the time (when it occurs), women in America are murdered or raped by someone known to them.
"Wag our finger"? I'd like to kill the bastard. That aside, statistically, everywhere in the world, more women are probably murdered or raped by someone known to them than by strangers. This isn't a problem unique to America.
Rape is about power, not sex.
No kidding. What's that got to do with America? Or is it about sex everwhere else, but about power only in America?
It's rare that an American woman isn't touched by this...most of them have either suffered it or know someone who has, myself included.
Let me guess, you're the former President of the University of (fill in the blank) I Am Woman Hear Me Roar Except When I Can Position Myself to be A Victim chapter of NOW.
Have you kept your American citizenship solely so that you can cast an absentee vote and do your best to turn the U. S. into a socialist Utopia from afar?
Seems to me you've already made your choice, why don't you make it official and declare yourself a British citizen, since America seems to be such a huge disappointment to you.

Honor killings in Pakistan are purely a cultural phenomenon. Usually, the people who commit such atrocities are illiterate and have never read the Koran. They THINK it's sanctioned by Islam. We're all literate here; we can all read the Koran. We have no excuse for such ignorance; it's beyond the pale.I will say that I am functionally illiterate on the Koran, as I have never read it.
However, I'm sure the local Pakistani Imams have skimmed through it a time or two.
What's their excuse? If it's not sanctioned by Islam, why aren't they speaking out against it? Doing nothing is the same as supporting it.
