U.S. Navy Revives Old Rattlesnake Flag, 'Don't Tread On Me,' To Fly On All Vessels

The U.S. Navy is ordering its fleet to fly the defiant "Don't Tread on Me" rattlesnake flag aboard all its vessels to emphasize America's determination in the war on terror, reports TIME magazine on Monday.

Navy Secretary Gordon England's directive said the resurrected flag "represents an historic reminder of the nation's and Navy's origin and will to persevere and triumph."

I've been advocating this for a long time. I love it! I think it presents the right image for this country: essentially peaceful, and we mind our own business, but if you mess with us, there's gonna be some trouble coming your way. "Don't tread on me!"

I understand the sentiment. Is it in the best of taste when it refers to a conflict with Great Britain, almost the only country which is (kinda) supporting us at the moment?

I have the red and white version with the uncoiled snake and the words "Don't Tread Upon Me." I understand this was an earlier version of the navy jack.

The commonly-displayed version has a yellow field with a coiled snake and the words, "Don't Tread On Me."

Britain is "kinda supporting us". Not enough - the hell with Europe after we saved their sorry rear ends. I have always loved this particular flag - "Don't Tread on Me". God Bless America!

The U.S. Navy is ordering its fleet to fly the defiant "Don't Tread on Me" rattlesnake flag aboard all its vessels...

More specifically, this is the "Union Jack"; the upper left quadrant of our National Ensign (Old Glory). Normally it's the familiar 50 white stars on a field of blue. It is flown from the "Jack Staff" on the bow of our warships when they are not underway.

The last time the US Navy used the "Don't Tread On Me" Union Jack was during all of 1976 for our bicentennial. Shifting to it now is mighty interesting. Presages immenent use of Battle Ensigns.

Damn the ragheads! Full speed ahead!!

I needed to empahasize your one point. Many here tend to disagree with me, but our government's interventionist policies are the main thing that got us into this mess. The Founding Fathers' warnings have gone unheeded for too long. We truly need to mimic the behavior of the rattlesnake. Mind our own business, but strike when provoked.

Yes - Reinstating the Gadsen flag is a great idea.

"We truly need to mimic the behavior of the rattlesnake. Mind our own business, but strike when provoked."

The tenor of your remarks seems to be that we have not yet been provoked. If you believe that we have not been provoked, why don't you so state, instead of wanking about with negative pregnants? I'll help you along. If you actually believe we haven't been provoked, you are an obvious sinkwanker and need to cast about the internet for the videos of the people jumping from the upper floors of the twin towers. FYI, "provocation" vel non is not the operative category. Catch my drift? The correct category [analytical framework] is "clear and present danger", under which each life lost in the WTC and the Pentagon can only be redeemed by 1,000 sand goblins, incinerated. "Redeemed" here means consistent with and as required by our national interests. And don't forget those two petri dishes, Medina & Mecca. Glassified, bigtime. Have a nice day and I really admire your tie. Those orange stripes, wow. You know, I just had this sinking feeling that I am slopping a hog with caviar. Ah well, such is life.

I like the yellow Gadsden flag, but I also like the one with the pinetree in the corner. Not sure of the name, but think that it was the flag flown by the Great Lakes fleet during the battle there with the British.

I agree. There use to be a guy who posted this:

US Army, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Air Force, all the coalition we need!

Alas, that was his screen name, he was banned. But regardless, he had it right, we don't need no stinkin brits, cannocks or anyone else to fight our battles.

All the coalition we need is:
the US Army,
the US Navy,
the US Marine Corps,
and the US Air Force!

Well, the Rattlesnake Flag was first used by the Navy. I didn't know that.

AnyFlag.com

Gadsden

GadsenThis flag was first used by Commodore Esek Hopkins, the first Commander in Chief of the New Continental Fleet, when his ships put to sea for the first time in February, 1776. Flags with the symbol of the rattlesnake were very popular in Rhode Island at this time. Colonel Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina copied this flag and presented it to the Continental Congress.

Yes, we damn sure have been provoked - and justice must be served.

My reference was to pre-911 policies in which we became involved as globo-cops, skipping around the world from one domestic dispute to another - and then wondering why everyone hates us. I truly hope you don't buy the BS about the a-rabs hating us "because we're a free country." If that is true, why have not other relatively free countries like Canada, Austrailia and Switzerland been attacked?

As I've already stated, we need to hunt down those responsible for the 9-11 attack, but after we mop up the desert with their beheaded bodies, we need to take a serious look at what got us into this mess in the first place - and it's not because of our freedoms. If we start to believe that, then we'll inevitably begin to give up our liberties in exchange for a false security.

Admire my tie?
Orange stripes?
What???

The "Stars and Stripes" was born from our conflict with Great Britain, too. If our national flag doesn't offend them, I doubt this one will, either. Every year, during 4th of July celebrations, I've had British friends wish me a Happy 4th. Though, some couldn't resist indulging in a little good-natured teasing, I've never met a Brit who got seriously offended by Americans celebrating the birth of America.

I'm no expert in American foreign policy/war, but I do believe that most of our "meddling" in foreign affairs has been to hold tyranny in check before it reaches our shores or affects us in some way. WWI & WWII are no-brainers, after that we spent much of our time fighting Russia indirectly in arenas like Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc. to stop the spread of communism. People like to say that the only reason we fought the Gulf War was because of oil. Even if we did, so what? You don't let a large cache of a most valuable resource fall into the hands of a madman.

I have to wonder about our "my enemy's enemy is my friend" choice of so-called allies. Seems like they always turn around and bite us in the @$$. Muslims in particular have been the worst. We helped Saddam fight Iran, Osama fight the Russians, then we saved Saudi Arabia and Kuwait from Iraq. We had our own self interests in mind when we did this, but that's no reason for them to turn on us like rabid dogs.

The entire world seems to constantly b*tch about the increase of American interventionism in world affairs. So... I'm very curious to know something: Exactly when did we start this "meddling" and does the time frame coincide with the birth of the League of Nations/United Nations? I think the world's b*tching may be aimed at the wrong target.
