ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Federal health authorities are investigating whether the West Nile virus has been transmitted through blood transfusions or organ donations -- but they insist the nation's blood supply is safe.

Doctors with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday they were looking into an outbreak of illness in four patients who received organs from a single donor.

Hello, John... there's really a very old, very simple answer to this and other insect-carried diseases- we used to call it Drop Dead Twice:

Well....you'd expect the initial risk estimate to be "very low" from any bureaucratic organization, wouldn't you? And, at present, it is very low, because only a small percentage of the population has West Nile virus.

Eventually, they'll know whether the virus has to be active for it to cause disease in immune-compromised people. Right now, they're guessing.

West Nile antibodies could show that you had the disease and lived, and developed antibodies, I would think. A man was on the news, and he survived West Nile, and said he is now immune to it. Is this true? Does anyone know?

I heard that some man ate or drank some DDT every day for years to prove it is not harmful to humans. I think that was on talk radio. Did anyone else hear that? Can't be much worse for us than Twinkies or Donuts. Now that is some toxic sludge.
