A recent state Department of Education memo that declared certain methods of home schooling illegal has outraged parents and other home-school advocates who charge that the state is trying to discredit them.

According to state education officials, children who are educated exclusively by their parents outside the supervision of a credentialed tutor, charter school or independent study program are considered truant.

Thank G-d my youngest son is almost 12. I may make it out of this morass. But what about grandkids down the road? This fight will never end.

Looks like grounds for a nice lawsuit. Plaintiff vs. State of California Dept. of Education.

Somebody help me out on this. Don't homeschooled kids have to pass standarized tests? And if they do, what possible complaint can the government of CA have against home schooling? It's time to stop the Communist Government of California.

I look at it this way: at least its a way for a single issue voter to cast their vote for Simon... Maybe Simon can get a couple thousands vote out of the deal...

This may be some form of NEA/Union vote. I think this can be turned around to say that these people demanding credentials are anti-parent. This is some politicial say you as mothers are bad parents.

"It's about having choice," said Elizabeth Kanna, a Sacramento mother who started home schooling her three daughters seven years ago.

Of course, liberals are only for "choice" when you want to kill babies, not when you want to educate children.

What they'll end up doing, because they don't have the time to enforce their ruling, is pass a law that says to go to any college or university that receives taxpayer money, the student must graduate from a public or private school.

I'd like to see this one go to an initiative. I'd bet passage by 80%.

80%? I wouldn't bet on it. The teachers' unions would demagogue it to death. Take it all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary and maybe on the way we might just find out that the Department of Education is unconstitutional!
