My family was at Myrtle Beach AFB in 1959 and we met Gloria. Our mobile home was blown over and we had to run to the AFB and spend the night in a hangar. Six months later we were in Japan and met a category 3 Typhoon. That one blew the center of our rice matte house out.

Last week Izzy came right over us as a tropical low and flooded the bejusus out of the area, I lost my phone, cable, and electricity and a week later we will get more of the same on saturated soil. It has been interesting. We are under a wind warning in North Mississippi until Saturday. I hope this low (hurricaine) and cold front approaching from the NW don't meet here Friday, if it does we are in for it.

Gibert was a butt kicker. It reminds me of gibert but gil did not maintain and dropped way off. The others caused more damage than the weather buffs readings expected. This baby is growing like a demon! and may out run Gilbert at its best.

Here is a pretty good site for weather maps. the link goes directly to the 500 mb level (about 18k feet). I'd suggest that LILI direction will be influenced by the upper air flow, although what level could be a problem. (can you tell I used to be a weatherman)

Thanks for the ping!

I just came back to LA from my home on the Texas gulf coast, last night. My son is there. Looks like it will make a direct hit on Avery Island. We were just there in April, that is where they make TABASCO sauce. I HOPE THEY ARE ALL OK! I think they already shut down their bottling factory there. They had $18 million in damages to New Orleans with Isidore.

Gilbert had a minimum pressure of around 880mb, unbelievable...probably a 1 every 200 years storm.

conditions have become and will continue to be less ideal for Lili....at least in theory. there is still time for significant weakening.

thats the only hope for the landfall area at this point, a storm of this strength will do an enormous amount of damage, no question about that.

my feelings are a decrease to 115-120mph by landfall. we shall see.

History gives some hope:

All major hurricanes in the gulf in October have decreased to at most cat 2 strength before landfall.

No guarantees by any means, but at least a little hope for sw la.

I lived right in the center of Hurricane Andrew. When I saw tight compact and speedy moving hurricane...Andrew came to mind right away. It almost is an exact clone of Andrew and the interesting thing it is the 10th anniversary of Andrew. I remember standing in my front yard with a Texas Instruments Wind Meter with a sustained wind of 113mph. Transformers blowing up for miles in the sky. Trees and homes being destroyed left and right.

It was a sight to be seen...but it was an overnight storm.

Glad that Galveston won't be hit but there will be high tides. We had 2 boards pushed up by Isidore,
might loose the whole dock with Lilli.

That's OK, Sam, we still love you here. You are right, they are rare this late in the year, this many BAD ones are rare this late in the year. And two hitting almost same area of La. a week apart is really rare!
