FBI: Maryland shootings fit no category Agency profilers can see no motive other than terrorism

WASHINGTON – It's not gang-banging. Or spree-shooting. Or armed robbery. And it's not a serial killer.

So what would motivate two assailants to randomly target five victims in a Maryland suburb, and possibly a sixth in D.C., killing each with a single shot from a high-powered rifle?

The calculated shootings, which took place Wednesday and Thursday, are like none that federal investigators have seen.

"If some sicko just wants to go out and essentially assassinate a bunch of random people – and he's not a terrorist – it's almost like a new category" of crime, said a veteran FBI agent.

The perpetrators aren't spree shooters, FBI profilers have concluded.

Typically, spree shooters are loners who snap one day and fire away until police appear and they come to their own violent end.

They typically seek revenge on an employer, such as the post office, or fellow students at a school. They come to the scene loaded with weapons, and take a stand, spraying victims with bullets.

But in this case, two men in a white van or "box truck" did not spray bullets, but picked targets, trained a rifle, or rifles, on their victims and aimed to kill, like trained assassins.

"In a spree shooting, there are usually a lot of people wounded," said one agent. "The shooter is not really taking time to aim."

"This is much more cold and calculated than the typical spree shooting," he said. "The victims were not wounded."

What's more, the sniper, or snipers, didn't take a stand, but sped off to avoid capture.

"This is different – they've taken great steps to avoid being apprehended," he added.

Authorities are said to have a description of the shooters but are not releasing it. They've reviewed video tapes from security cameras at some of the businesses where the shootings took place.

"The idea of terrorism is to spread fear," said one law enforcement officer. "If that's what they wanted to do, they've succeeded, because there's a lot of fear in the Washington area right now."

If I and the other FReepers who are guessing these murderers are Islamic terrorists are right, then we've reached a new low in this country.

The authorities will have decided that it's more important to be PC and try to downplay religious hatred than to give Americans a decent description of suspects so they can be caught before they kill more.

Or to put it another way, the authorities will have weighed the lives and safety of average Americans (ie, those unable to afford bodyguards and live in gated communities) against offending the sensibilities of both PCers and "ethnic enclavers" , and decided that our lives are not as important as not offending sensibilities.

It would be as if they came right out and said,"Yeah, so a few nobodies get shot, maybe killed or paralyzed or permanently disfigured. What difference do they make, compared to the important things in life, like showing how tolerant and understanding and nonjudgmental we are?"

G-d help us if it is Islamic terrorists. There could well be an explosion of rage-by no means directed exclusively against Muslim immigrants-if that turns out to be the case. The betrayal of Americans by a government which refuses to police our borders-and then lies to us if h*ll breaks loose as a result...It could get very, VERY nasty.

Let us all HOPE these killers are basic homegrown "grudge against society" losers, killing at random innocents so they can feel powerful and godlike.

I'm not any of us have the cojones for that kind of thing anymore.

For clarification, do you mean we don't have the cojones for the senseless killings of innocents based on our perceptions of their reigious or ethnic background? If so you're probably right, and thankfully so.

Well the shooter did open fire. And a still standing live target isn't much different than a paper target with a 12 x 18 inch hit zone, and anyone can do that with a decent rifle and just a little bit of training (I often teach people to shoot my .223 Daewoo and have never failed to have a non shooter consistantly hitting milk jugs at 125 yards in less than 20 shots with open sights).

Shooting at paper targets is one thing.

Calmly (physical and mental calmness is necessary for good shooting) transcending the oldest of man's prohibitions is something else entirely.

This stretches the topic subject a little, but isn't it ironic that (put your sarcasm hat on) Bush II, who manipulated the court system to become president, who killed kyoto on secret orders from the Brandenbergers, who revels in the suffering of innocent palis and furthers the ZOG initiatives in this country, has not jumped on this to blame it on Iraqi terrorists under orders from saddam himself?

Sadly, we would expect something like that from the toon, but dubya proves he is moral not by doing right, necessarily, but by refusing to do wrong. I have been critical of bush in some areas, but dang, its getting harder every day, LOL!

>>> How about most of it! Sketches and descriptions of the suspects . . . interviews with family members of the victims . . . news about the ongoing manhunt . . . warnings to people about being alert . . . it's like they don't want us to know anything whatsoever . . . and why is that?<<<

bears repeating!

" Sort of reminds of a sniper reported in Israel a few months ago -- a brazen, yet calculating shooter who hit his targets. Chechnian, Bosnian, maybe. As I remember he'd leave the rifle, just a stock bolt action.

Yes ...and a typical IRA technique....speeds up the getaway...and those old bolt action Lee Enfield 303's are low cost

[Authorities are said to have a description of the shooters but are not releasing it.]

HUH???

Possible Reason #1) Member of a "protected class" -- i.e. non-white.

Possible Reason #2) Middle eastern men on their 20's-30's.

Possible Reason #2 is my bet. The authorities want to catch these perps without making an announcement that some middle eastern men on their 20's-30's are responsible. The public would be outraged, and it could very well lead to "open season" on anyone who fits the profile -- about as close to out of control as the situation could get.

Political correctness prevents the highly sensitized Mont Co police from desrcibing anyone with his/her racial or ethnic background, dont you know?

You should not post such things...I'll have you know that I am a tinfoiler with ADD, and I mistakenly thought that Saran wrap would work to keep the orbital mind control lasers at bay. Stop picking on my disability!

LOL!

Possibility #3) the SOBs are under surveillance to see who they talk to, don't want the public calling in the cops and causing other bad guys to rabbit

... transcending the oldest of man's prohibitions is something else entirely.

There are a certain percentage of people who have no problem at all with this. They seem to be born that way. I've known numerous examples during my life and travels. Some of them make the news almost every day. This person (or these people?) is obviously one of them. A person like this doesn't need any extreme training with a rifle to accomplish his dirty deeds. Just marginal skills and minimal training.

My experience has been that one of the quicker ways to die is to assume anyone has any qualms about killing you or how or why he is going to kill you.

Don't let the snake get to you.

Would you think, the further this goes on, does he(they),
get more likely to be psycho's, or terr's?
I would think that someone off his bean would not hold up.

If you have a carry permit, or live in a free state, now's the time to exercise your 2nd Amendment duty and stay vigilant, should these terrorists forget that Americans are slow to anger, but merciless once the balloon goes up.

Don't need no f*ing permit.

I understand Johnny Cochran is filing an ADA lawsuit on your behalf to demand that the orbital mind control lasers be redesigned to be "Saran Wrap blockable" as a "reasonable accomodation" for your disability.

The races are mixed. Two had Hispanic last names, one was Indian (dot not feather), one was white, I believe, and I don't know the race of the last victim. I don't know the races of the man that was shot and killed in DC last night and there's no ID on the woman who was shot and wounded in Fredericksburg, Virginia this afternoon.

The ones who are trainable to a really high level of ability tend to have qualms.

The ones who don't have qualms tend to lack the patience needed to be teachable.

Possible reason #3:

they are ex-cons who took up "the religion of peace" and were released on liberal parole.....
