LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Nearly one-fifth of the $64 million Gov. Gray Davis has raised for his re-election has been donated by people he appointed to state boards and commissions, according to a report published Sunday.

At least 75 of the roughly 140 boards with statewide authority include at least one Davis donor, while many have a majority who are contributors and some are filled exclusively with political donors, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis of campaign finance records.

Yesterday afternoon I listened to a local radio station which was interviewing a Republican central committee member. This party hack was offering that the party's internal polls showed Davis' lead had shrunk to 5% after the debate and that this narrowing of the gap had prompted Bush to committ to a trip to California later this month.

If the Los Angeles Times is publishing this type of report and the article is being rehashed and republished by AP one suspects that Davis is indeed truly hated, even by the far left, and in fact may be in trouble on election day in spite of Simon's continuing blunders.

Thanks for posting the story. Read it in several online sites. Modesto Bee, Sacramento Bee....etc.. AP story in case you don't want to register LA Times to read their stories. :o)

Now, if Simon is thinking in the right direction, let the news keep whacking at Davis and his money whoring. Most certainly Attorney General, former state politician as Democrat, Bill Lockyear will not investigate or charge Davis with criminal wrong doings. But when it comes to anyone else outside the Democrat party, you bet he is on it! Chuck Quackenbush, yes Chuckie did some no nos!

"It's dynamite," said Hollywood nightclub owner Gene La Pietra, a former parks commissioner who gave $80,000 to the governor this year.

"You get access," he said. "You get things done. ... It is a prestige booster, no question."

How fun! For a mere 80K you get to kick around other people's money and feel really important at the same time. Gee whiz I guess that's what Denocracy is all about!

The article said there is no quid pro quo for political contributions. This is the most laughable statement I've heard about contributions. Before the new gov's appoint people the first things they check are party registration and contributions. It is so well known in state service, it's like a fact of life. Republicans and dems all do it the same way. Whoever made this statement is a bold face liar.

Simon can win by G-d! He can win.

Yes. All he has to do is contribute whatever is left of his campaign funds to Gray Davis and Davis will appoint him Governor.

"People have a constitutional right to participate in the civic process," Salazar said. "This is all line-drawing. It gets into the touchy issue of how far can you go without violating constitutional rights."

Deflection time. There is nothing in the constitution that precludes the governor from declining to accept the quid pro quo. An honest man would.

Now you know the contributions had NOTHING to do with the appointments., yeah right! I wonder if the woman he appointed to the energy commission (head) contributed. As far as I know she has absolutely no experience in such matters or for that matter in supervising.

The only thing "touchy" about selling appointments is how "close" it is to graft, and whether a conviction could be easily obtained.

I love having a guy named Salazar give the rest of us asinine lectures about how corruption is a Constitutional right. He's obviously referring to the constitution of the country he's loyal to, and not ours.

Wilson received $138,700 during his first term from six of the 13 people he nominated for the board. Davis' appointees have donated nearly 10 times that sum, or $1.3 million, either directly or through affiliated companies, during his first term, the Times said.

GREAT FIND!!!! I hadn't seen this article.

Davis is so corrupt it makes me sick. Go Simon! DUMP DAVIS!

Naw, there was an article that came out after the 2000 election (I think) that showed that per capita, Democrats had the highest dollar donors, while Republicans had more, smaller dollar donors. SOmething like that. Wish I could find it. Of course, the press won't report something like that ...
