I will be on a college trip to the Loop on 22 October and would like to meet and hopefully stage an Infinite Freep with Chicago area Freepers during the 3 hours of personal time we will have. If you can't help with that, tell me what you would do with three hours in the Loop on a Tuesday afternoon.
Just one thing: Please use Freepmail to discuss any details of location times/places/descriptions of personnel, etc.

That's that. If all Else fails I'm going to go to the top of the Sears Tower with a large version of Old Glory to let Osama's boys know that this Midwestern boy ain't scared of them.

Well, if you have only 3 hours, I'd go to the Art Institute of Chicago on Michigan Ave a couple blocks east of the loop. For a very small fee you can see all sorts of really, really famous paintings and other artwork from about 1 foot away. I think that's your best Chicago value. Although the Sears Tower still is the world's tallest building, you'll have a better view from the Hancock Tower northeast of the loop, north of the river, on the east side of Michigan Ave.. That's also where Chris Farley bit the big one.
If you had more than 3 hours, you could get on the Metra at Michigan and Randolph and go south to the University of Chicago (it's about a 15 minute walk west from the Metra station) and see a very famous school. You can also see the sculpture (on Ellis Ave just north of 57th St. on the east side of the street) commemorating the development of atomic energy where busloads of Japanese come and emote on the anniversary of Hiroshima/Nagasaki, apparently without having learned why they should be celebrating rather than mourning the event. If you went east from the Metra station, you'd come to the Museum of Science and Industry, a popular attraction. You could see the remodeled Nutrition exhibit for which I and another student were the consultants.

Thanks very much to both of you. I probably will check out the Art Institute, and try not to look too small town (you know, walking around with mouth agape, looking up at all the taaaalllll buildings).

Go to one of the stands in Chicago and get a Italian beef sandwitch and tell them to dip the bread and put the celery hot relish on it.
I really miss those.

There are some good historic sites. If you need contact me
Chicago historical society is'nt far. Excellent on Lincoln's history though a little north of the loop about 1 1/4 of a mile

Or go over to Roosevelt and Interstate 90/94 (the west side of 90/94) for Jim's Original Maxwell St. for great Polish. You can get a Polish on a bun all the way, a porkchop sandwich with the bone in it, and two orders of fries for about $4.70.

Chicagoland Chapter Bump!
I'm not sure there is an opportunity for a proper FReep, like the one we are planning for the 25th... But if you can idenitfy the leftist to defy, and give us a general time (2, 3, 4p?) you expect to be free, some of us might be able to meet you.
Especially those of us who work in the loop...
If you'd like, we could take on the crowds at one of the train stations giving them hell for supporting Democrats who are holding up the economy...

It's not freeping but the bar at The Berghoff on Adams between State and Dearborn is a great place to spend a couple of hours.
To: RedWing9
The ones I really wanna get are the limp-wristed bedwetting anti-war shills that have been in Kluczynski Federal Plaza every morning beating their anti-war drums...
To: usconservative
Geez, those same people were at the Margret Chase Smith Federal Building in Bangor, Maine today! Pretty fast movers for a bunch of bedwetters, eh?

Now that I work in the loop, this is a good excuse for us to do lunch together. I can probably arrange my lunch hour for any time.
Based on Silverback's posts, we should take him to Moody Bible Institute.

Mr. Dog,
It was fine of you to refer Silverback to us. I agree with all the recommendations presented.
I expect to be working in Chicago on that day and would be glad to meet up with Freepers at The Berghoff. I can probably get there by 4:00. Its a sort walk from the Art Institute.

Pay respects to a great hero of the American war for independence - Thaddeus Kosciuszko.
The monument erected in his honor is located on the greenbelt between the Shedd Aquariam and the Adler Planetarium, and remains as grand example of great urban sculpture, unlike so much modern and post-modern "art" that litters our nation's public areas. One of America's and Poland's greatest heroes and patriots, he fought for freedom with the American Revolutionary Army. Kosciuszko distinguished himself by building and fortifying West Point, and became engineer of the Southern Army. In 1783, the United States Congress offered him citizenship, land, a pension and the rank of Brigadier General. He returned to Poland where he led the Insurrection of 1794. His indomitable devotion to the cause of freedom made him a symbol of the pursuit of freedom everywhere.

greetings from a born and raised south sider. Now in Michigan. Just visited the Mesuem of Science and Industry last week, they have some nice updated exhibits from when I was younger. The Titanic exhibit is very cool and there until the end of October. Also liked the new virtual reality exhibit. Always have to see the whispering station and Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle. The best part is the new underground parking.

Yes, I would recommend the Hancock Tower. I personally like this one because my fiance proposed to me at the restaurant there :) Here's a tip: instead of paying the fee to go to the observation deck, just go to the lounge. I think there is a drink minimum, but you can usually avoid this (slip in & say you're meeting a friend already in there), and you get the same view as on the observation deck.
As for the sculpture at Ellis & 57th, I warn you that is not the best neighborhood. I used to live down there and had pepper spray in hand at all times when walking there, day or night. The Museum of Science & Industry there is neat, I recommend a cab ($20-25 from the Loop). Public transportation around there is not so safe. They do have a Titanic Exhibit there now which is supposed to be good.
