Houston / Harris County Poll Watchers Needed

 

The John Cornyn for Senate and Texans for Rick Perry Campaigns are in need of volunteer poll watchers.  Poll watchers are allowed in polling places, under certain restrictions, in order to help ensure fair, open and honest elections.  There is a real need for this effort.   The Houston Chronicle reported that over 2,000 illegal votes were cast in the 2001 Houston mayoral election and run-off.

A Poll Watcher:

1) must be present at the polling site on Election Day (11/5/02) at 6:45 am. before it opens.
2) must bring a Certificate of Appointment with him/her on Election Day.
3) cannot leave the polling site unless given permission by the election judge, meaning this is an all day commitment (6:45 am – 7:00 pm) on Election Day.

Training sessions covering the rules governing poll watching will be held Monday, October 28 and Tuesday, October 29, both at 7:00 pm at 1800 Post Oak Drive in the Pavillion shopping center (between Americas and Hunan restaurants).  These sessions will last approximately 1 ½ hours and are important to attend to learn the dos and don’ts of poll watching.  You will receive your Certificate of Appointment at these sessions as well as your assigned polling place and a map.

Note that in Texas, you have to be a resident of the county in which you poll watch. I just learned that yesterday, thanks to some excellent links provided by resourceful freepers...

Is 0813 your home precinct? My precinct has 4.3 Democrat voters so I'm sure I would be assigned elsewhere.

How do you get 4.3 democrat voters? Somebody's cat or dog represent the 0.3?

That is my home precinct. Originally I was going to be alternate judge for a different precinct, but since the original election judge couldn't do it, they switched me. Lot of new homes in the area, so even though it is a GOP precinct, hard to tell which way this precinct will vote. Word is my alternate is a "hard ass". Good. I can handle "hard ass".

Houston may be a good place to be on election day for those who don't believe in a resurrection.

We conducted a ballot security/poll watcher class earlier this week in Tom Green county (San Angelo). Some additional info. At early voting locations, a party is allowed to register up to seven poll watchers for each, and those watchers may rotate in and out as fits their schedules. Precinct poll watchers are limited to two per precinct, election day only of course, and as you say, must be there all day. Poll watcher must stay all day or can be refused re-entry, BUT if the presiding judge allows his workers to leave (lunch, smoke breaks, whatever) he must extend same privilege to poll watchers.

Also see Chap 34 of Election Code. If petitioned by 15 registered voters of the county/senatorial district, the Sec of State SHALL appoint a state inspector to oversee an election. 34 is less than a page long, very straightforward.

It's too late now, but for future elections, if petitioned 15 days prior to election day, a party shall be allowed to appoint a signature verification committee to review legitimacy of mail in ballots, an area with huge fraud potential.

Election code can be accessed online at www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/eltoc.html By all means, download all of Chap 33 (not that long) and give each poll watcher a copy. Also Sec of State Elections Div. 1-800-252-8683, very helpful staff there.

Be sure and remind your people, no cameras, no tape recorders, but they are allowed to view everything in the place and take notes, except of course a voter marking the actual ballot. If an election official assists a voter, watcher may view that.
