This was viewed on their ticker this morning-no link yet. Can anyone confirm or provide a link to this story?

Also-looking for a link to a Washingtpon Post(or other) story detailing how it was a citizen, not police, that found the car and only after the media heard it pon a scanner. Thanks!

What ends were the police serving by not being more dismissive of the White Van Theory?

The police, especially the feds wholeheartedly believe that cops can only solve all crime, when in reality the vast majority of crimes are solved by vigilant citizens who report a tip or call 911.

I think that slowly the wall the liberals have erected is beginning to crack. The wall that makes the sheep believes that the government can and will protect you only if you place all your trust in the politicians and repent.

It amazed me that CNN was running on the street interviews just the other days with people admitting they not longer believed the cops could protect them etc…

Maybe to every storm cloud there is a silver lining?

For one thing, the hope is that is would make the shooters think the police were on the wrong trail, lulling them into overconfidence...

I don't believe it - because on October 8th a cop found Muhammad sleeping in the Caprice and let him go on his way. This is pure CYA.

They had Muhammad the very next day - and let him go. Methinks what you believe could be strategy is actually incompetence.

It fit the profile the feds were feeding the local cops and the local cops believing the feds were omnipotent or something ignored the rest and now it has come back to haunt them.

I firmly believe once this is all over and the full story comes to light we will see that it was government incompetence and PC that killed most of those poor folks, that if the cops had gone with their gut instinct and eye witness reports instead of what some profiler was feeding them we could have caught this guy and saved about half of those who died.

As it appears now the locals we on the right tract but for whatever reason discounted the obvious. They had this guy several times and let him slip thru their fingers.

I'm sure there was a lot of crap being transmitted to law enforcement only. Items like this are curious in hindsight, but they could have had an alert out for 3 or 4 other vehicle types. They may have received a tip that an Asian man was seen driving a VW at three of the shooting sites. So they'd put word out amongst themselves, so what? Nothing to see here.

One possible strategy, the bad guys will switch cars if we announce.

Don't know how they could spread the info around to various agencies without it becoming public anyway.

I live in the DC area and I know for a fact it wasn't secret. At the DC shooting of the 72-year old, DC police said a witness saw a caprice. This was being reported by the local news at the time. I remember hearing it.

White Van?

the hope is that is would make the shooters think the police were on the wrong trail, lulling them into overconfidence....

A problem with that idea is that all of the police officers I've heard talking say that they were only looking for a white van. It does appear that law enforcement was fixated on the white van theory.

If so, that would have been a great strategy, since they then "overconfidently" killed four people and seriously injured another after October 7. This wasn't a TV series -- though I'm beginning to wonder if the FBI, so rampant with profilers, psychologists and analysts, has lost touch with reality.

Or maybe the ego-maniac Moose wanted to take complete credit for the arrest, and let the public think they were helping by looking out for a white van, when in reality they were just wasting their time. Moose needs to explain why he never told anyone about the Tarot card having references to Jamaica, and constantly steered the profile to be a white male. Why did he not release the Caprice tag numbers? (CNN did). It looks to me like some fed up police officer had to leak the info to the news. I'm from Virginia, and I still can't get over how Moose felt he had the right to run a Virginia police investigation. He was put in office by Reno and Clinton to pacify the NAACP. Next time stay out of Virginia's way, Moose!

Many reports since the capture have reported October 3 (the date of the DC murder) as the day the Caprice was reported. There was a also a car (not a van) reported seen at the Fredericksburg Michael's shooting on 10/4, but I can't recall the exact description.

Since the suspect was apprehended within a couple of hours of them releasing accurate details of the Caprice, I've wondered if some deaths could have been prevented if they had released that info earlier.

I've never seen anybody nail down exactly when they suspected the Caprice was actually the sniper's car, but if I was a family member of one of the victims, I'd sure be asking some hard questions like, "What did the police know and when did they know it?", and if they suspected the Caprice, why not release that info instead of just the white van/truck info.

Thanks. Yeah, that's what I thought -- and needless to say I've been paying close attention.

I don't fault the police in this one. They went with their best lead. Hindsight is 20-20. These cases are hard to solve. The police moved real fast once they had a handle on the Malvo print -- I think they rest went down in 24 hours. Probably saved a life right there.

This is CYA disinformation. None of the cops who stopped the car knew either, so it wasn't even released to law enforcement. Plus, did you see any caprices being searchged at roadblocks?

Also tip line agents blew off callers reporting anything but white truck and vans!
