Riots rage on as Miss World contestants flee Nigeria (Muslin, Christian Street War)

Riots raged on in the northern Nigerian city Kaduna after violence there forced beauty pageant organisers to abandon plans to stage Miss World in Nigeria.

Fighting which began as protest by Muslim youths against a newspaper article on the pageant has now degenerated into a bloody street war between Muslims and Christians, witnesses say.

An AFP journalist was forced to join around a 1,000 refugees hiding in the Kronenbourg brewery in the south of the city near the main road to Abuja, protected by troops and an armoured car.

"We had to run for our lives. They came to my house in two cars and tried to burn it. We really don't know what is happening," 20-year-old Julie Adabo told AFP.

Another woman said that a gang came to kill her after burning her home and only let her live when she lied and claimed to be a Muslim. One man said he had seen his brother cut down before him.

As she spoke, gunfire could be heard from the Trikania district around the plant and several buildings could be seen in flames.

Rioting in Kaduna on Thursday claimed at least 100 lives. Many more are since thought to have perished.

"Fighting continued until 11.30 pm (2230) GMT in this area. It started again at 6.30 am. We hear gunfire permanently," said the plant's French manager Regis Bouffartigue.

"The soldiers shoot and the demonstrators return fire. According to the soldiers, the demonstrators even have AK47s (assault rifles)," he said.

Miss World's organisers announced early Saturday that they would quit Nigeria and seek to hold the December 7 ceremony, which was set for the Nigerian capital Abuja, in London instead.

Trouble erupted in Kaduna on Wednesday when Muslim youths, incensed by an article on the pageant, burned down a local newspaper office.

On Thursday the fighting became more general, as rival Muslim and Christian groups roamed the religiously mixed city, burning homes and murdering in the street.

Troops and police responded with lethal force, and by Friday morning the Red Cross was already reporting a conservative estimate of 100 dead. That figure must now be much higher.

Red Cross spokesman Patrick Bawa said Friday that as the fighting had spread from the mainly Muslim north of the city to the mixed, poorer south, it became impossible to track casualties.

Similar clashes that broke out in 2000 claimed at least 2,000 lives.

Christians in Kaduna forced to renounce their faith or die

KADUNA, Nigeria, 13 March 2000 (Newsroom) -- About 300 Christians of the Kabe ethnic group in the city of Kaduna were abducted and forced to renounce their faith by their Muslim captors during religious clashes in the state last month, according to a human rights group.

Human Rights Monitor, a Kaduna-based human rights group, issued a report recently that said those who refused to renounce Christianity were killed. It did not say how many died.

The forced renunciation of Christianity came during a week of clashes between Christians and Muslims over the introduction of Sharia law. As many as 400 people died in Kaduna state and in some southern cities when fighting spread there as bodies of some of the dead were buried in their home states.

Nigeria*s constitution permits Sharia, or Islamic law, as it applies to personal relationships such as inheritance, marriage, and adoption. Eight northern states, led by Zamfara state, moved to implement Islamic law in the penal code as well. Sharia penal law permits flogging, stoning, amputation, and beheading for certain crimes.

Fighting in Kaduna began February 21 when Christians demonstrating against Sharia were attacked. According to Human Rights Monitor, an initial understanding between Christian and Muslim youths in the Hunyin Banki area of the city was disregarded when Muslim youths attacked the Baptist Theological Seminary. Four student pastors at the 52-year-old seminary were killed by Muslim youths who stormed the school during the riots.

The seminary students resisted one attack, but were overpowered later by a larger mob, the Rev. Uche Eyioha told Champion newspaper, a Nigerian national daily. The school*s library, four classrooms, and chapel also were destroyed. Many students, staff, and their families were injured; an unknown number remain hospitalized.

The implementation of Sharia has since been suspended by the country*s National Council of States, which is composed of the president, vice president, all 36 state governors, and former heads of state.

Good point. You can also add that satanists and necromancers also walk freely among us. I worked side-by-side with a satanist one time. Everyone knew it. She almost got a promotion. That isn't bigotry at all. i think it is perfectly natural to not be inclined to pursue a relationship with someone that embraces any sort of belief, to which you are fundamentally opposed (i would include LIBERALISM in there at the top of the list!)

i agree with Arthur, i would tell her that is the reason. You would not be rejecting her personally, just her beliefs, and if they are not something she holds very strongly, maybe she would give them up. But if they are something she embraces, then you are right to steer clear.

I would never marry a Muslim. There are two many problems built into that faith for the mixed marraige. In Christianity, while the Bible advises against being "unequally yoked", marraige is still considered sacred and ordained by God.

But I have read too many letters on the "ask the Imam" site advising people their marraiges are not even valid, and actually considered sin in the eyes of God. If they are not an American born Muslim, you always run the risk of them disappearing back to their own country and absconding with your children, and getting no legal support there, because, after all, you are an "infidel".

To ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of

Let's also make sure that our classroom teachers blame no one for the 9/11 disaster. I have heard of a few different applications of this principle (business, personal relationships) but the clearest application is the marriage between Christians and non-Christians.

And of course there's the China/Formosa conflict, which threatens to erupt. North Korea is a threat, and evidently the government perpetrates considerable violence upon the subjugated people.

Yes, and the reason India was partitioned was ubiquitous violence. Many people tended to view it as violence between Hindus and Muslims, as though the two were equally inclined to violence. However, Hindus get along quite well with people of all other religions, whereas Muslims do not; violence follows them wherever they go. It's not a coincidence.
