I have to disagree with you...while I do NOT want him to resign his seat - he does not deserve to be majority leader - not bwcause of this - but because his spineless cow-towing to the Democrats every chance he gets - and that sham of a show trial of IPOTUS der Schlickmeister.

I've got some off-color jokes I'd like to share with him. Should I do this by fax or e-mail?

I'm not pouring cold water on your idea, but it looks like he has already made a decision of some kind:

Well, this whole episode just goes to show you what happens to a mealy-mouthed senator who tries to be all things to all people. Lott is gone, and I can't say that I'm that upset about it. He's gone quite out of his way to keep the people happy who would stab him in the back at a moment's notice, and those same people are doing JUST THAT as I type. I don't think he'll resign his seat, but he will surrender the leadership. His efforts to kowtow to dims/libs over the years has been hugely unsuccessful (i.e. the Wellstone funer-rally), and at the same time cost him support in his own party. Anyway, hopefully he's out, and as conservatives we need him out to make way for someone with a little more backbone to take over the majority leadership. Lott would have squandered any advantage the GOP had in the senate within months anyway. Good riddance.

It bothers me when I hear conservatives and liberals calling for Lott's resignation. What Lott said has been distorted and blown way out of proportion. This is just another play from the democrats playbook. After they get Lott they will be looking for the next republican to destroy with their politics of personal destruction. And the destruction will go on and on and on!

The dems don't want Lott to step down. They want this storm to blow over so they can bash him again later.

Thanks for the link to Senator Lott's email. I've sent him a note urging him to step down from leadership.

Sorry, couldn't agree with you less. The position of Lott's defenders seems to be that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Lott is being attacked by the Left for this. So, since the Left is my enemy, I should stand by Lott. Doesn't work like that. Lott's words were wrong. Words mean things. They are important.

If the people of Mississippi want him as their Senator, that's up to them. If they want to recall him, so be it. But I am fine with calling on other Republican leaders - including my 2 Republican Senators - to do what ever they can to make sure that Lott is not the leader of the Senate.

Long term, I think this issue is very helpful for the Right. We have another opportunity to forcefully inject a discussion of character in to the national dialogue. What is right? What is good conduct? It starts with Lott. It doesn't have to end there. Demands for impeccable character from our leaders can produce a whole new framework for discussions of such issues as personal responsibility. Who will benefit from such a national dialogue the most? Conservatives! WE are the party of personal responsibility.

The future of America is integrated. If conservatives want to be the party of that future, we should have no tolerance for bigots - or even those who make bigoted remarks - as our national spokesmen.

CLINTON PLAYBOOK #13: Stand by your man, no matter what.

(The drawback of this strategy is loss of credibility).

CAN'T JOIN YOU THAT MUCH.

1) I DO THINK ENTIRELY TOO MUCH time and energy have been spent on the Lott issue and on racism as a whole. We are talking about our survival as a people, a nation, a culture.

We are on the brink of a WWIII which will leave at least a third of the world population dead from war and natural disasters. This obsessive frenzy over a relative nonissue is idiotic, shameful and exceedingly useless in the over all scheme of things.

It is also a compulsive manipulation of the media by the left toward increasing their weakened power. They ought to be slapped down fiercely in every honorable way.

2) Given Lott's behavior during the impeachment fiasco of Billdo and Skullery, I don't think he deserves to lead a team of chicken coop cleaners or dog catchers unless TREASONOUS is part of their logo. Given his capitulations, kowtowing to Dasholl et al post 2,000 election, I'm not sure he deserves to show his face in public, much less the media.

3) The left needs to be shredded 12 times over for every hypocritical assault on Lott. Byrd needs to be lofted very high on the very high piles of his own pitiful turds 2 dozen times for every democrud comment about Lott. Byrd should lose sleep at night for fear the masses are going to run him out of DC and out of his home state and out of the country wearing tar and feathers and nothing else. As it is, God will likely be the only one making him pay for his exceedingly offensive and shameless hypocrisy. Thankfully, God will do a better job than the rest of us put togeher. I do wish He'd do it sooner than later. Sigh.

I strongly disagree with you.

While I hate to see him leave the leadership over this, I weigh that against the fact that this is a self-inflicted wound.

It's worse than a diaster, it's a blunder. A rookie blunder at that.

I echo the sentiment of National Review that is posted here somewhere: How can I support Neville (I-have-an-iron-clad-agreement-with-President-Clinton) Lott now when I never have supported him before? His being (possibly wrongly. I dunno) accused of being a bigot is not sufficient reason for me to start supporting him now.

Soory Reg, luv ya but I gotta disgree with you.

If Bush keeps this guy as a lightning-rod and the voice of Republicans in the Senate, he is a fool.

George W. Bush is no fool.

Thanks for providing this thread.

Small minds sieze on an opportunity to push selfish agendas. The time for infighting is not the present.

The enemy in the cultural war is to be found behind the shrill black voices who know they are losing control of their people.

Young educated blacks can't be dragged and dropped in the voting place with $3 payment for their vote.

Fear is driving the issue. We must not abandon the field while winning the battle.

I must disagree. I thought his comments were wrong. I also can't stand Lott's spineless pork-barreling moderateness. He should definately resign a majority leader.

You've got to be kidding. This has nothing to do with Dems' orchestration. He is not decent enough to be MY majority leader, and I am shocked at FReepers who think he's OK as theirs.

I, for one, am not just paying LIP SERVICE to the Republican dream of a colorblind meritocracy in these glorious United States. I really MEAN IT.

Since the weekend, I have struggled to come up with any way in heck that a non-racist could say the words Lott said at the party. It simply would not come out, wouldn't even be thought, most especially into a mike with CSPAN's cameras rolling . And for gosh sakes, he is supposed to be the Senate Majority Leader, at that. Unpardonable, IMHO. He is either too racist or (and I am being generous here) too stupid to be our leader.
