U.S. Seen As 'Fortress America'
CBS News ^ | 12/18/02 | Ian Stewart

(AP) Travel executives say the nation's $91 billion foreign tourism industry is in peril because of a growing perception overseas that the United States has become "Fortress America."

In the year after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, 66 million fewer visitors tried to enter the United States, according to Immigration and Naturalization Service figures. And those who did try were sent back home at a higher rate than the year before.

Travel industry executives complain that the post-Sept. 11 security crackdown at airports - especially some widely publicized incidents in which visitors were searched, interrogated and put on a plane back home - has discouraged tourism.

"There is an impression being made that we are creating a Fortress America," said Rick Webster, a spokesman for the Travel Industry Association of America.

INS officials recognize the concerns but say their first priority is to secure all borders.

Fortress is a good thing. In fact, let's seal and militarize the borders. Sounds good.

Good news...

The problem is that we are not letting any freedom loving jihadis into the country..... That's just wrong. </sarcasm>

I live in upstate NY. Everyone speaks English and are for the most part polite (folks hold doors for females, etc.)

Right now, I'm working as a consultant in CA. These people are freaks. Latino chicks shave their eyebrows, have a dozen piecings in each eyebrow and dozens in their ears. The dopey guys have more acne and scruffy beards than one can imagine. They harvest zits from ingrown hairs. I'd bet that only 25% of the Califonia population speaks English. No one could pay me to live here. This country is doomed if this is the future of this country. PATHETIC.

Look on the bright side... When they take the Southwest away from us (or if George W. Bush gives it to them) it won't be part of our country anymore, right?!?

"Right now, I'm working as a consultant in CA.."

Say man. I moved here (to CA) from Tennessee. Can you believe this place? Where do these people come from?

Have you been to San Francisco yet? Seriously, after my second or third trip there, I re-rented The Rock, you know, the one where Ed Harris is going to nuke San Fran? For the first time, I'm rooting for the bad guys.

Or Superman I. I never realized Lex Luther was right! (Just joking, of course.)

Seriously, if America knew what kind of people lived on the left coast, they wouldn't let Californians move east.

BTW, valley people aren't like that. Valley people, and Northern CA people (Sonora, Tahoe, Redding, etc.) are almost normal.

The data are totally screwed-up. The numbers don't compute in the first place, and in the second, the number of entrants does not differentiate between tourists and legitimate workers (who cross the border in the thousands every day). The fact that only 1 of every 700,807 is turned back should not scare the tourist industry (or terrorists for that matter).

My wife, Karen, is a native-born gal from MN. I grew up and went to school in CO. We ended up in NY "state," not the city. We are sorta "hicks."

We'are retiring to NC on Lake James. The folks there are soooo nice. And, they actually speak English.

There are times that Karen and I wish that we had not had children. This country is doomed. There is no concept of the work ethic which founded this country. Those who succeed are taxed to the Nth degree. Others are blood-suckers. There will be a "brain-drain" to Argentina or Australia. Then the Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton crowds can rip the copper pipes from the tennaments in the Bronx of NYC and complain that it is all the "rich / fat-cat's" responsibility for not providing money for those who are too lazy to work.

Nah. I lived in the Cumberland Mountains in Tennessee. We were hicks. Two hours from Nashville and a million miles from the rest of the world.

NC means North Carolina, right? I lived in Durham, for a while. When I was there, there must have been every bit of 12 people who lived there. Now, I hear there's about 312,000, and crime is rampant.

I know what you mean about fears for our children. This is not the America I bargained for.

I wouldn't know where to go to find the true America, today. Born in Louisville, grew up in Indiana. But lived all over.

The closest I ever got to MN was when I lived in Michigan. The UP is nice, there.

Oh yeah, NY is like living in back in the 50s.

Sure it is, I believe you. LOL!

Lets see, your Senator, the Honorable Hillary Clinton, voted into office by New Yorkers, makes my two idiots, Boxer and Feinstien look conservative! Hee Haw. LOL! :o

Right now, I'm working as a consultant in CA. These people are freaks.

Bet most of them are from places like New York. Hehehe. But hey, the east coast is great if you like brown snow and frigid weather.

Oh, that's an easy one. They come from places like Tennessee and New York etc.

Seriously, if America knew what kind of people lived on the left coast, they wouldn't let Californians move east.

That's is a very interesting statement, given the fact that a huge amount of people in Cal ARE FROM THE EAST COAST. LOL!

East coasters are kinda strange anyway. Come Jan 1, millions of east coasters are sitting in their motorhomes on Colorado blvd in Pasadena gawking at tacky parade floats. LOL! And we always hope for rain on that day. We are usually disappointed though, and get our typical 70 degree january day. Dang! Maybe this year there will be a down pour and only then, will we tune in for a few moments to have a big ol belly laugh. All in fun.

Most native Californians would rather go to the dentist than that place.

While much of the east coast stares at the tacky floats, we will be at our place in the high desert during that time. Closest neighbor is a 20 minute walk. Oh, and they are originally from Tennessee. They told us that after spending 30 years in the Tennessee rain, they had hadenuf!

Florida is OK. I just can't deal with your summer humidity. And the flat geography is a little boring. But your right, not all of the east coast is a brown snow, frigid environment. And I would like to think, you guys in Florida don't sit around and watch the politically correct Rose Parade.

"East coasters are kinda strange anyway.." Tennessee is not east coast. It's the midsouth. Where'd you go to school? California? Figures. And I'm not from Tennessee. Check my moniker. "Hoosier." Get it? As in "Indiana Hoosiers."

But, even that is not east coast. That's the midwest. But I'll tell you one thing my midwestern and midsouth brethren have all over us: they don't have a bunch of faggots telling them they can't own guns. And that's worth a lot.

moron

Dang, I thought you guys were Cornhuskers or something like that. Aint no biggy. I never considered anything east of the Mississippi the Mid-west anyway.

"I wouldn't know where to go to find the true America, today."

You might try central Missouri. I was born in CA, family from CT, Army brat, so lived all over the world, husband from Virginia, we've lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, TX, Maryland, etc. You couldn't pay me to move back to any of them. The only thing I don't like about Missouri is it has a state income tax, and a bunch of liberals in KC and St. Louis. If we could make those two cities secede, Missouri would be perfect.

That's right! Destroy my illusions about the heartland! I'll bet you even told your children there was no Santa!

"..trips to places like the zoo...." They must mean San Fran or LA.

Actually, I never liked Indy, anyway. It never was the same since Eddy Sachs vaporized himself in that magnesium race car at the 500.

"..I am midsouth on the westcoast but a little mideast of the that.." Now, that's confusing. That's like being a "conservative liberal" or "liberally conservative" or "liberally liberal" or "rank conservative" or..........

Stop it! I'm getting a headache!
