Owens is accused of smoking in office - Would be a violation of law; executive calls accusations 'bizarre'

Since her election in 1998, Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens has supported tough anti-smoking efforts, including raising the state tobacco tax and sponsoring a "Smoking Stinks" campaign for teens.

But Owens, a longtime smoker, has yet to kick the habit, and some say she lights up in her county office -- an apparent violation of state and local law.

Owens, a Democrat from Millersville who was re-elected last month, refused several requests for an interview.

How did I know that she was a democRAT before I got to that part in the article?

Typical democRAT mentality: "We need to pass laws for the little people, but they don't apply to us."

Reminds me of the time I was in Houston's Civil Courthouse (when Rats were controlling it) and as I walked down the halls, I was overpowered with the smoke, wafting from under doors of the Most Holy Judges and clerks - while the peons stood outside in the elements!

I don't agree. I mean, tying up heavy loads for other men to carry, while lifting not a finger yourself isn't, "bizarre"

It should be, but it's not.

Unfortunately for the rest of us there's nothing "bizarre" about it now days.

Oh sure! Do as I say NOT as I do. She can kiss my butt. Why doesn't the anti's come down on HER for smoking IN her office, no less. Oh! But I forgot! She isn't one of the LITTLE people!

I wish the TEENS would find out about her smoking habits. I wonder what they would think, then? Maybe we can get the message out for her, eh?

Recently, the American Lung Association of Maryland launched a statewide campaign to extend the smoking ban to the hospitality industry.

Just tying up loose ends now, sweeping up the debris left by strict prohibition in DE and NY. And this idiot smoker is one of the traitors who help it along. Bastidette!

Where was all the anger on finding out our illustrious Senators have permission under the law to set their own smoking policies in their own offices? Or that the Congress built a new enclosed smoker-friendly dining room in the Rayburn Building for themselves? Or that Bloominidiot has exempted his cigar-smokin' buddies from the strict prohibition imposed on others? Did anyone other than me write letters? (This is not to you, SheLion, or to the others who are frantically trying to keep our freedoms from slipping down the damn drain, but to those who can't be bothered to even be a squeaky wheel.) Anyone write the Republican National Committee and demand they not hold their upcoming convention in Bloomy's NYC? What will it take? Armed SS (Smoking Squads) at your front door? Well, it's coming.

Thanks for the article. My myriad of socialist friends as well as fellow conservatives who oppose smoking cannot understand why my disdain for this government grows greater every day......

they better be prepared to eyeball down the wrong end of a long gun if they try that kind of nonsense in certain areas of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. those good ole' boys (and girls) don't take too kindly to outsiders coming in and telling them how to live.

Gabz, a couple of years ago I believed that about all Americans, but my faith is being stretched to the limit.

Found one, SheLion:

(The Senate cafeterias have smoking and nonsmoking areas. The far grander Senate Dining Room has no restrictions, perhaps because it has its own ventilation system.) In the House of Representatives, the Speaker has banned smoking in all public areas including corridors, terraces and restrooms--except for a recently designated indoor smoking area on the second floor inside the Rayburn Building. Theoretically, for now, congressmen may do as they please in their offices.
