Those "Silly Attacks on Patty Murray
Seattle Times ^ | Editorial

Posted on 12/24/2002 7:45:41 AM PST by Kate in Palo Alto

THis is what the Seattle Times thinks of efforts to call Patty Murray to account:

Election time is the silly season, and state Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance and Congressman George Nethercutt already have started the shenanigans for the 2004 U.S. senate campaign.

Their gasbaggery last week over U.S. Sen. Patty Murray's conversation with a Vancouver, Wash., high-school class was all spin and distortion.

Wednesday, Columbia River High School honor students studying world history were treated to a discussion with their U.S. senator about world events and U.S. policy. Murray, a former teacher, noted many people in the Muslim nations view the United States with suspicion and posed a question:

"We've got to ask, why is this man (Osama bin Laden) so popular around the world? Why are people so supportive of him in many countries that are riddled in poverty?"

She noted the wealthy bin Laden, believed to be an architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, has established goodwill because over the years he built buildings, roads and other facilities for poor areas.

"How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?"

To let this slide from a member of Congress (the people that are spending tax money) is to completely abdicate any sort of responsibility the press (and the Seattle Times) has for oversight. The United States has given billions of dollars in aid to the Muslim world. Oslo dictated a $500 million payout to the PA. What have they done with it other than terrorize Israelis? Pakistan got a cool $600 million last year. We provide countless billions in indirect aid in the form of the Peace Corps, Red Cross, and other organizations.

Murray is an imbecilic shrew, and should be drawn and quartered in the public square, if only to warn future dunces against running for office....

No doubt the Seattle Times' editor made sure that those four words were inserted into the sentence. Imagine the coronary he would have had if someone let this slip through:

She noted the wealthy bin Laden, architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks...

Hint....We do not see the democrats urging her ouster, do we??? How come??? The pubs joined their dem friends in a pre Christmas bashing of Lott. Why are the dems saying nothing now???

Because we have standards we adhere to and they don't. The Lott affair has been debated ad nauseum and most agree that having him step aside as Leader while retaining his seat was just.

I know you disagree. But really, advocating that we go the way of the rats and rally 'round one of our own and apply no accountability is not the desirable path.

cyn...I do not advocate anything. My thinking is that in politics, one does not aid and abet the bad people. The republicans had a hard fought and well deserved win in the past election. I voted, and gave money to two would be senators.

The Lott affair was never about Lott or what he had to say. It was about partisan power politics. I do resent republicans aiding the democrats in self destruction. As a conservative that aids the republicans, I also resent republicans here on FR using demeaning language day after day. In less than two years these same people will be here asking for our support and votes for Bush.

"Murray should be removed from the Senate."

There is a great danger in not having people like Patty Murray in the Senate. If the really wacky members of the Left Wing Lunatic Fringe do not have a daily opportunity to show us what they are really like, we would have to get this stuff second-hand.

And then it will sound like somebody made it up.

Since September 11, the United States has increased relief and development aid to several states in the region to help them absorb the economic shocks of war and reward them for providing logistical support in the U.S.-led war on terrorism.

Pakistan, which became a key ally in the war in Afghanistan, will get $200 million in economic aid and $50 million in military support. (In the fall of 2001, the United States lifted a ban on aid to Pakistan imposed when General Pervez Musharraf seized power in a 1999 coup.) The United States also arranged for the World Bank and the IMF to forgive about $1 billion in loans to Pakistan.

Turkey, which has provided military support and helped track terrorist financial networks, will receive $17.5 million in military aid. Previously, it had not been receiving any military aid.

Central Asian states that have provided air bases for U.S. operations will also receive military aid: Uzbekistan will get $43 million, and Kyrgyzstan will get $4 million.

Postwar Afghanistan, which is struggling to recover after years of Taliban rule and the U.S.-led war that toppled the Taliban, has already received almost $450 million in humanitarian and reconstruction aid and will also get $140 million in economic and military assistance.

In Afghanistan women doctors are again practicing medicine and women teachers are back in the classroom. No longer are women being tied, bound, and executed in public arena's!

Help our children if Patty Murray were in the classroom today!

When this was first reported P.M. was quoted as saying to the students - your Pell Grants are at risk. P.M. sees Pell Grants vs National Security.

Another thread in FR contains a copy of a report by the United States Agency for International Development which shows that in fiscal year 2001, prior to 9/11, the U.S committed $173,000,000 in humanitarian financial aid to Afghanistan alone. That item in itself blows a hole in Murray's argument, and I forwarded it to Joni Balter, who was probably the author of the the unsigned Times editorial.

Re: Your editorial, entitled "Sen. Murray asks students to ponder bin Laden’s popularity"
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/134599925_webmurray20.html

Greetings!

I feel that you're political slip is showing.

I don't quite see how direct quotes of a United States Senator can be viewed by your editor as "spin and distortion". Unless, of course, that the Senator is a Democrat and not a Republican.

Sen. Murray stated quite clearly that Usama bin Laden built roads, schools, homes and (unbelievably) day care centres. Fine. Where? Specifically? Did she check that "fact"? And as a news organisation, did you?

Sen. Murray stated, again with crystal clarity, that bin Laden did these things, but that the United States did not. What is she (or you) using to explain the logic underlying that conclusion? Has she forgotten the BILLIONS that the US Government sends of our tax dollars to help countries and peoples around the world? Has she forgotten the Peace Corps? Has she forgotten the hundreds of millions of dollars that we as a country sent to Afghanistan in aid and support PRIOR to 9/11? Apparently, she has.

Either that, or she's just lying.

And you're editorial repeats, and indeed augments, that lie.

You stated in your editorial, "Fact is, Murray's information about bin Laden is right. The Associated Press quoted a bin Laden expert saying the senator's comments were "a generalization, but mostly accurate." However, let's look at that a little closer. The "expert", one Michael Swetnam, has been quoted, but his research material hasn't been examined very closely. It is, in fact, nothing more than a 54 page "book" (booklet, more accurately), mostly photos, with no real analysis of Usama bin Laden or Al Qaeda. Not exactly what I would view as an "expert". Well, perhaps your standards are lower than mine. Much lower, in fact.

The truth is, Murray is wrong. Dead wrong. Her words have already spread to this region, and pro-bin Laden sites are trumpeting her words as a way to garner more support. She is providing aid and comfort to the enemy (in this case, Usama bin Laden in particular, and all terrorists in general). The last I checked, the Constitution of the United States (you know, the one she supposedly swore an oath to preserve and protect), describes her actions quite clearly. It's called "treason". You may want to check this out yourself - Article III, Section 3.

Unlike you, I happen to actually live in the Middle East. I have now for many years. I've gained a great deal of respect for the people I work for and with. And with the exception of a (very) few bigots which you will find in any culture, every single one of them thinks that Usama bin Laden is a dangerous and evil man, who perverts the religion of Islam to his own twisted purpose. They know he's not a "humanitarian", as Sen. Murray tried to portray him.

The only "nonsense" I can find is in your support of her. Senator Patty Murray must (not should) resign immediately. The other option is for her to be impeached from her seat in Congress. There is ample evidence to support this action.

Many thanks.

The above comment goes to the black heart of the liberal soul: all atrocities are given a pass so long as the socialist agenda is followed. Sure, bin Laden killed people, but they were mostly just Americans - besides, he's wealthy and gives his money to the "poor".

Even more disturbing is the smug intimation that we greedy, well-fed Americans are responsible for bin Laden because we haven't been good little Socialists.

May I suggest that everyone contact their senators (you can get the details from http://www.senate.gov) and send them a letter like this one...

Senators,

I respectfully request that you take immediate steps to begin disciplinary action against a member of your body, one Senator Patty Murray of the State of Washington. I believe that her recent public statements regarding Usama bin Laden are of severe enough import to require that she be impeached from the United States Senate.

To wit, her statements (which have been recorded and witnessed) fall under Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution of the United States. Her words are providing aid and comfort to an enemy of the United States (Usama bin Laden, Al Qaeda and associated terrorist organisations) during a time of war. This is in direct violation of her oath to preserve and protect the Constitution.

I also request, respectfully, that you take all necessary steps to publicly condemn her statements and her actions.

Many thanks.

You should make sure to include your full name, address and telephone number(s).
