Yeah, but he could have yelled out that he was armed or something...seems kind of trigger happy to me.

I sincerely hope that you forgot your </sarcasm> tag on that observation.

This potential victim's first mistake was having insufficient caliber for home defense. A .22 is better than nothing but not much.

An early-morning carjacking attempt turned fatal for a would-be carjacker whose threats prompted a driver to pull a concealed revolver and shoot him several times, Metro police said.

Jerry Williams Jr., 25, of Wallace Road, Nashville, was dead at the scene after he attempted to carjack a new Ford Explorer SUV at about 1:30 a.m. at the Golden Gallon convenience store at 198 Haywood Lane, police said.

Williams was shot after he jumped into the SUV and demanded that the driver, Billy John Brown, 50, of Ezell Road, Nashville, start the vehicle, investigators said. Williams had first asked Brown for a light for a cigarette when Brown came out of the store, police said.

''Mr. Brown stated the suspect told him to start the car three times,'' night court documents state. ''As Mr. Brown refused and began to get out of the car, the suspect stated, 'I will kill you.' Mr. Brown retrieved his .44-caliber Taurus that was in the seat beside him, and as he got out of the car he saw the suspect raised (sic) his hand up as if he had a weapon, and Mr. Brown returned fire, striking the suspect several times.''

Williams' companion, David Lee Moore Jr., 20, fled during the shooting but was captured shortly afterward, police said. He was in the Metro Criminal Justice Center last night, charged with attempted carjacking.

Brown, who has a permit to carry a weapon, was not charged, and police are considering the shooting a justifiable homicide, police spokesman Don Aaron said.

Aaron added that the shooting will be investigated by the district attorney's office, and he said that there were several witnesses whose description of events agreed with Brown's.

Earlier this year, Brown ran for a seat in the state House of Representatives, losing in the 59th District to incumbent Sherry Jones. He also incorporated Skydive Record Co. out of his home, according to the Tennessee secretary of state's office.

Mischievous mood this morning.

I don't often post a "view source" document; I hope I haven't run afoul of the AM.

Although the victim is more of a "house-wine" type of guy than a "Joe sixpack" fellow, I don't think that made any difference in this case.

Thanks, I finally caught on when I read a little further down.

IMHO, civilian crime victims shouldn't be too concerned about the 'escalating force' concept. It just doesn't apply and would probably get us killed.

Cops, of course, have to follow it. It's the nature of their job and I don't envy them one bit.

Inwood in NYC is upper Manhattan. Inwood on LI is between Vally Stream and Long Beach. If the wounded man was taken to Jamaica Hospital (which btw is experienced in gunshot wounds) then it was clearly the latter.

The hospital on record, Jamaica Hospital, is still an uncommon choice from the location of the incident. Nassau General or Queens General would have been a shorter transport. And then there is the county line and all accompanying laws, transport fees, etc. If the perp's condition was such to allow such a long ride from Inwood to the corner of Van Wyck Exp. and Jamaica Ave he must not have been in too bad a shape.

Or am I thinking of the wrong hospital?

The home owner needs some range time too. :-)

The perp was strong enough to run and hide. The EMS assessment might have been that his wounds were not critical and, Jamaica Hosp. is primary in SE Queens for all such wounds. Since Inwood abuts Queens it is likely that the perp (as in most sw Nassau crimes of this type) is from Queens and was trying to get home. The story does not say if he was arrested in Nassau or Queens, just a few blocks away. Either way, this type of seemingly illogical transport is in fact common. It happens in Manhattan all the time.

"He should should have stashed the unregistered gun and explained the intruder shot himself with his own gun. Worse they could do then was throw at him for possible perjury. Yeah I could see the D.A trying to convince a jury to take a robber's word over a citizen who saw the idiot trip on his own gun."

Yeah...but he was shot a few times..

I lived in Jamaica from '55 to '73, it just seems a really long way.

You're right it is a long way. I can only assume that Jamaica Hosp was chosen for experiential and security reasons.

Don Imus has a handgun which he wears openly on television. Yet, he is publicly in favor of gun control.

That is a nice little Glock he's carrying now. Seems like he had a bigger one a while back. A year or so ago he was sporting a big cowboy revolver in his briefcase.

I've not heard him support gun control. He has stated that McCainiac (who he dearly loves), is wrong-headed on gun control.

I'm glad he openly wears his Glock. The libs at NBC have to hate it. It shows more clearly than anything I can think of, the hypocracy of NYC gun laws.

They give a permit to an acknowledged former drug addict and alcoholic, yet will deny you or I in a NY minute.
