Jerry Williams Jr., of Wallace Road, a 25-year- old with a police record, including two aggravated assault charges.

Oh no, the proverbial "he was a good "kid" turning his life around" story isn't going to work.

....I think a winch is in order.

Absolutely. Don't go off road without one. WARN is your friend! :-)

(We used to have an old ute type Land Cruiser for deer camp. Biggest Warn winch we could find on the front bumper. We actually used it once or twice (bottomed out just like you, got it wedged against a sapling another time), but just having it is sort of medicine against getting stuck in the first place. Sold the LC when we started having kids --- the youngest is just about old enough to hunt now . . . )

"The question is, was that a .44 special, or a .44 magnum."

In either event, it's no mystery how the perp ended up dead, unlike so many threads where a criminal gets shot by a .22, and lives to sue about it.

we have a similar law concerning attempted carjacking (if you're in the car) here in utah.

a couple observations...

don't fumble around on the floor looking for a piece - it goes on your hip.

keep the doors locked on your car. you spent a lot on it, and don't want to clean blood and glass out of it.

stay aware of your surroundings.

shoot fast. shoot straight. shoot safe. practice. carry. molon labe.

"When they are running away and are no longer a threat, you cannot pursue them and kill them," said Raybin.

This concept needs to be rooted out and destroyed, first from the minds of the sheeple, and then from the law. Obviously, someone who was attempting commit armed robbery/murder/rape/etc. IS still a threat to innocent people, after running off into the night. Police often don't catch these lowlifes until after they've harmed or killed their next victim.

It didn't matter in the end. All the perp heard was BOOM!

Yes....I studied them last night. I think a 9000lb WARN is the ticket.

Poor old 8 year old LR....she'd never gotten stuck before....and thru a lot of stuff that even at times 4 wheelers were afraid to go thru. I felt bad for the old girl....it was my damned fault.

I like the old Land Cruisers....boy howdy they have held their value well.

Thanks and Regards.

Is yours the old fashioned LR with the tire on the bonnet, or one of the new suburban assault vehicles?

Just kidding - I have a Ford Explorer now, a little more useful than a two-seat Land Cruiser with two jump seats when you have kids -- but I have taken it a lot of funny places, including through the world's largest mudhole at a Boy Scout encampment. (I suddenly had an Explorer in a tasteful shade of Georgia Red Clay. EVERYTHING was mud-colored, including the glass and the kayak racks on the roof. But we did NOT get stuck. Some folks did. I took one look at the guy going through ahead of me and set the range to 4W LOW.)

I still see our old LC around town. It's in good shape, the only thing the guy has done to it is take off our home-made trailer hitch and put a Class III Draw-Tite on there.

Maybe the dead perp in this thread should be nominated for "I wished I'd never said that." in that other thread. As in, "I wish I'd never said 'I'll kill you'".

Good observations, and I'll make use of them. I also got some 'extra ammo' on the National Buycott Day, BTW, from the owner of the local gun shop - not bullets, but valuable information that I can use to protect myself and my loved ones.

The owner of the gunshop is a former police officer and now trains LEO's in chemical weapons use. He taught me about practicing my draw from my carry position (which for me is an outside zipper pocket of my purse); to practice this over and over again, each move of it, in slow motion. The point, he said, was not to be a quick-draw from the start, but to take time at home under controlled conditions and sloooowly experience each step of the draw, so that the 'memory' of my draw from concealment would be sure.

He also taught me to not only have keys in hand when leaving a building (at night especially, but I do this all the time now) but also to have my zipper pocket undone and my primary hand already gripped on my carry piece.

I couldn't thank him enough for all the time he took with me that day. He was a real pro, and an interested, exciting and most experienced teacher.

Here in Texas they tell you if you ever have to use your weapon in self defense, make sure the bad guy ends up dead.

It's your word against his.

the only thing i could add to his excellent admonitions would be:

carry an insanely bright small flashlight... (Surefire E1 is an example)... some of them are kinda pricey... but well worth having. hold it in your weak hand with your keys...

after all, you can't assault what you can't see. you can make the dark your ally.

get a copy of "Safe not Sorry" by Tanya Metaksa - buy it or borrow from the library. i bought my wife a copy along with a G26 and an SP101 for mother's day two years back. she's got her carry permit now, too.

keep safe. God bless, and Happy New Year!

glock rocks (but i carry a SIG, go figure.)

...after all, you can't assault what you can't see. you can make the dark your ally.

This statement by you, glock rocks, and the picture posted by Squantos caused me to do a little research. They aren't cheap! I like the whole idea of the TID's and see the wisdom of carrying a high-lumen Surefire flashlight in my weak hand (which, praise the Lord, is actually my left and stronger hand. My right eye is dominant and so I shoot more accurately with my R hand).

Your comment about making the dark my ally brought to mind a recently read verse in the Greek (Septuagint) Book of Wisdom, and it applies very well to all the info we have shared here:

"Compared with light, she [Wisdom] takes first place,
for light must yeild to night,
but against Wisdom evil cannot prevail."
Wisdom 7:29-30

Surely it is great wisdom to be armed and trained, to use light as a means of defense, and to be prepared to use tactical impact rather than deadly force when possible and necessary. I thank you both for your contributions to my acquisition of wisdom and wish you all a happy and safe new year. It is good to be reminded that "against Wisdom evil cannot prevail," and I think this will be my watchword for 2003.

My son stuck his GMC pickup on the dirt road that leads to Johnson Cave. I'm usually one that doesn't like to get muddy but I had a dinner date with my wife that motivated me. The fear of being late and facing a wrathful wife makes a guy do unbelievable feats. We jacked the truck up in the mud and chopped up brush, branches and small trees to put under the tires. We made it out but since I didn't want to slow down, I slammed my head onto the inside roof. I never noticed that the truck didn't have a headliner before.

My son has a '74 Ford Bronco sitting in the driveway for the last two years. It needs an engine and everything to the tires. It also needs body work. Come to think of it, there's only the remnants of a Bronco there.

With all the different fashion options available to women, you might try carrying your piece on you. Even in the hottest weather, it's possible to carry a .45. There are vests, flat bottomed blouses, and in the colder months, sweaters.

The failure of women's fashion for a carry mode is the lack of a suitable belt which is the key to securing the holster so it doesn't twist. My belt is a plastic reinforced instrutor's belt that I doubt would look fashionable but with a cover garment it's not visible anyway.

Have you seen the bra holsters? I can't locate a picture online, but they are plastic, molded to one's particular piece, and sewn onto one's personal, mailed-in undergarment at the front middle. Called the 'Bosom Buddy' they were introduced to me in the March/April issue of this magazine:

I really need to renew that subscription.

Also found a proponent of your theory - "The well dressed woman accommodates her gun," - in this article: "A Woman's Primer on Defensive Firearms Use."
