Muslims in the United States braced themselves for a fresh backlash and what they see as anti-Islamic bias.
Sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad converted to Islam in the mid-1980s, and Islamic groups are afraid it will touch off threats and attacks similar to those that followed the 11 September attacks.
Muslim groups were quick to condemn the shootings and distance themselves from the sniper.
And they told members of their community to go about their daily activities with increased caution
Prayers
Islamic leaders said that they had been praying that the sniper had no connection to Muslims.
John Allen Muhammad worked as a security man at the Nation of Islam's "Million Man March" in Washington.
The American Muslim community should not be held accountable for the alleged criminal actions of what appear to be troubled and deranged individuals
Nihad Awad, Council on American-Islamic Relations
With the arrest, Muslims now fear a new round of discrimination and intimidation.
"We are concerned that because a suspect in this case has the last name of Muhammad, American Muslims will now face scapegoating and bias," said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair).
He cautioned the media not to engage in speculation about the sniper based on religious stereotypes.
"The American Muslim community should not be held accountable for the alleged criminal actions of what appear to be troubled and deranged individuals," Mr Awad said.
Anti-Muslim discrimination
Cair said it received 1717 reports of harassment, violence and other discriminatory acts in the first six months following the 11 September attacks and 325 reports in the following six months.
It was a 30% increase over the same period before the 11 September attacks.
Some incidents were particularly violent. In the state of Ohio, a man slammed his truck into a mosque near Cleveland.
In August, an 18-year-old man raped a 15-year-old girl in California while making anti-Muslim comments.
Shots have been fired at Muslim community centres in Nevada, Ohio and Texas.
Other centres and schools across the US were vandalised.

Agreed. But why are so many troubled and deranged individuals Muslims? Is it a religion or a mental illness? Unfortunately, for every hundred who whines about backlash, there is one who stands up for America and denounces those who kill in the name of religion.
What would the reaction of the Muslim world be if a crazed group of Christian fundamentalists took over a plane and crashed it into downtown Mecca?
That's just it.
They have nothing worth destroying.
Except of course each other.
Guess their moon god just wasn't listening!

That fact needs to be repeated as many times as possible.
There ought to be a law against the racebaiting and fearmongering from the left. The DNC frightened many young inner city children by telling them horrendous lies before the 2000 election - telling them that Republicans would make them slaves - they cried when President Bush won. That's front page newsworthy, BBC!
There was a very funny post here, describing the absurdity of CAIRs claims. Check it out:
Why do I have a hard time picturing this?
if they want to be respected, they can speak out against their murderous bretheren and fight for the mideastern governments to stop supporting terrorism. they are not the victims here -- but if they insist on playing the role, i'm sure there are plenty who would not mind helping make it a little more authentic.

WARNING: Anti-conservative Clause Detected!!!
When??
"We are concerned that because a suspect in this case has the last name of Muhammad, American Muslims will now face scapegoating and bias," said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair).
Not only that name thing, he is also a muslim, like most of the people causing problems world wide.
He cautioned the media not to engage in speculation about the sniper based on religious stereotypes.
That is the medias right. Especially if the towel fits.
"The American Muslim community should not be held accountable for the alleged (yeah, right) criminal actions of what appear to be troubled and deranged individuals," Mr Awad said.
Especially if they are muslims, as usual.
Anti-Muslim discrimination.
Is understandable when normal people learn about the religion of murder.
Some incidents were particularly violent. In the state of Ohio, a man slammed his truck into a mosque near Cleveland.
Some incidents were particularly violent. In the state of New York, 19 muslims slammed our planes into 3 buildings murdering 3000 people.
Stay safe; stay armed.
Eaker Freeper Status
Oh really, some of us interpreted the silence of the Muslim community on both this and 9/11 as something other than condemnation. This writer has an active fantasy life...
Maybe they should try praying to God.
Maybe they should try praying that they will fulfill God's will rather than that the Moongod of Arabia will fulfill their will.
(But if they do, they'd better not let anyone know it. Their fellow Muslims will murder them.)
So how many reports of harassment, violence, and other discriminatory acts have they had since the snipers have been in custody. I don't see any report in this report that states that they have. Is this Cair crying wolf? Are they not getting enough attention? It would make me very happy if they all would just pack up and go back from whence they came. I never thought I would say so a thing, let alone think it. But thats the way it is.
Thank God for President Bush.
